this really bugs me, modern knife makers claiming they can make wootz , considering the properties of wootz were due to a single iron mine in india that has been since depleted , there can be no more wootz, not ever, if they wizard some up in a lab ( im sure they can right?) it still wont be wootz which was wootz because it was from that mine !

pattern welding does not = wootz or damascus steel ( though everyone thinks it does, probably not here but you guys know what I mean)

I know in modern scientific tests on ancient true wootz blades , they were crystalline iron with carbon nanotubes running through the matrix, making a blade you could bend all the way in half but that could still hold enough of an edge to cut through chain mail and other swords made of lesser steel.

if im wrong then I am but, for the longest time I wasnt ;p

anyone with any facts please add to the discussion: modern wootz- is it wootz?

I'll be over in the bleachers watching this one from the sidelines. Way, way, way over my head. Wootz? Sometimes you guys are really really good and showing me how dumb I really am. But trust me when I say, I'm soaking it in much as I can.

I thought you guys would be all versed in this, I am a novice and I know about the wootz!

no its totally on topic ! -- thats exactly what im talking about , this guy thinks that damascus= wootz , and it does not, we still cannot make wootz, which is crystalline iron wrapped around chords of carbon nanotubes, this only happened because of one mine in india with just the right amount of flux material to create the true wootz, a true wootz-- even with advanced forges they cannot duplicate (yet) the crystalline iron with carbon nanotubes within.(even though modern steel can beat the old wootz, they still cant duplicate it .-- but yeah its totally on topic JN and a good link, thanks.|

and the guys response to the first post is spot on! very good read.

Damascus bought lots of steel from india though -i think in wiki it even said around persia "give him an indian response" was meant to mean, "stab this fool with your knife "

lol its what I read when I posted this !-- see lots of claims but not one Phd in mettalurgy--- its just marketing for these guys, notice they only refrence "techno-wootz" and pictures of their own materials-- no comparison shots from true wootz

Hey these guys are right down the road from me! Somehow i doubt the rediscovery of how to layer carbides without folding (aka Damascus) is an major techno breakthrough. Would be an interesting visit to see the process tho. Even the cryo has been around a while. Yep...agreed Gehazi. Cant compare apples to oranges if you dont have an orange. They do trademark "Techno-Wootz™". That there gives you the right to say peanut butter = diamond™!
