Pete's Shoppe vs production quality

I'm considering ordering a 110 via Pete's Shop and wondered how the fit and finish compared to 110's off the retail rack.

I know there won't be any comparison in terms of materials (who would buy a stock 110 from PS anyway). As I said, I mostly wanted to know they compared in terms of fit and finish.

Any customers out there with experience in both PS and off-the-shelf lines who care to comment?

Longden,

Search back a bit and you'll find reviews and pictures. PCKS puts together knives by hand.... as good as production quality is, these are outstanding

Thanks Bob. Your 110 with the ram's horn scale looked super.

Has anyone posted a picture of the Asian water buffalo scales? That's the one I'm interested in. In fact, Brian Lavin looks like he ordered my 110 by mistake

The website is really innovative and (pardon me) cutting edge, but the images, while very helpful for a general impression, may not do justice to the final product, especially the water buffalo scale which is difficult to make out clearly on PCKS, other than its color.

Hi Longden,
Yeah, I figured you needed someone to do a beta test for you, so I accepted the "challange"

I'd post a pic of mine but my scanner is not talking to my PC and vice versa, can't seem to figure out the problem. May have to start from scratch with a clean hard drive(ouch).
But to happier things, the water buffalo scales are sort of a black with grey/white swirls running thru it. Mine has the finger grooves, so the scales sort og change color where the milling was done, sort of a greenish cast, kinda like the color you see on copper that has a lot of oxidization. Sometimes I wonder how they'd look w/o the grooves on the scales, but there's only one way to do that

Anyway, I really like mine and the BG42 is incredible stuff.
Go for it, you won't be dissappointed.

Thanks Brian. Sounds like Buck users have a lot in common. I agree about the BG-42. My 501MS has been a real champ in the edge holding and re-sharpening dept (I'd buy another if I could find one).

Anyone know (or Buck care to comment) on the conspicuous lack of G-10 or micarta in the scale choices? I'd have thought it'd be a "natural" given the relatively simple geometry involved. A checkered G-10 hunter, while not as aesthetic as stag or water buffalo, would definitely catch someone's attention (well, at least mine).

VERY nice looking 110 you have there Alan! I have seen bald1's pics as well. Thanks for the temptation!

Thanks Alan, she's a beaut ... would definitely make me scared to be a water buffalo! All that's missing is your name engraved on the blade.

Do I remember something about PCKS doing something about the name you enter on the opening screen?

If I remember correctly, PCKS didn't do anything with the name you entered initially. You could get whatever you wanted engraved on the blade or the handle.

Alan
