Petition to repeal California's switchblade ban

If a topic concerns laws of any kind, the the knife laws forum is the place to discuss it. The exception is the president of KnifeRights, he was given permission by the site owner to post in GKD.

The real way to get something done is by finding an influential legislator to sponsor a bill to change the law followed by lobbying from influential organizations who support the change. This is not meant as criticism of efforts to change the law by a petition, but merely pointing out the way things actually work. Petitions are not generally very effective, but an "online" petition is probably the least effective way of effecting a change.

My understanding is balisongs we're banned due to the increasing number of self inflected injuries that resulted in trips to the ER. Fingers were getting cut at an alarming rate apparently. Their portrayal in TV & movies as dangerous didn't help but was not the primary reasoning in their ban.

There is no ban on ownership. People in California can own balisongs and switchblades of any size, they just can't carry them on their person or in a vehicle if the blade is 2" or longer. Nor can they sell them/loan them/transfer ownership, or manufacture them for sale (California penal codes 17235 & 21510).

But it's perfectly legal to possess them in ones home. And people are certainly capable of injuring themselves with balisongs at home ;).

You know as I was typing it I was trying to remember the source and I can't right now. I want to say it was from TV or maybe one of the CQC instructors at Gunsite. My memory ain't the steel trap it used to be. If I remember I'll post it.
