So, I have been on the endless search for a good "weekend edc", I say weekend because I spend my days as a marketing graphic designer in an office full of people who would probably freak out if I pulled out a big knife to open something. I carry a custom designed small Buck Vantage Pro in the office. (Thanks Spketch for the kick ass Koa Handle) While I love the Vantage design, I find the small one is a bit small for my "weekend" tasks such as hiking and bbqing, and the big one is a bit large for my tastes as well. Anyway, I find that a 3" blade hits the sweet spot. SO, My weekend edc is usually an Enzo Birk 75 in S30V with a CF handle. I love love love that knife. On a Whim though, I picked up a recently discontinued Kabar Phat Bob for a rediculously low price.

I can say that I am thoroughly impressed so far. Mr. Bob Dozier is a well known and very talented knife designer and you can certainly see it in this design. I just got it today and love it alwready. Grat ergos, great blade grind and very good overall feel. I used it to chop some brussel sprouts for dinner prep and trimmed a tritip steak as well, which is currently sizzling on the grill behind me...Damn that meat smells good.

So, back to the review. I don't have all the specs on me at the moment but...It has a 3" AUS 8 blade, linerlock, tip down carry (I prefer tip-up), and a very nice polished OD green Micarta Handle. I love micarta.

The knife rides pretty darn low in the pocket and is actually not that noticeable in a pair of jeans amazingly enough. The weight isn't a big issue for me either. I am a 6'6" guy after all, small knives look weird in my hands.

The blade is deployed by a right hand only thumb stud and comes out with am authoritative "thwack!" If you are ever worried about opening it in public though, it is easily opened slowly which muffles the sound. I have heard some complaints about the thub stud being hard to reach because of a small cutout...I dont have the problem, I have big hands too (size large gloves).

As far as the blade goes, It is a 3" drop point with a hollow grind... It for some reason makes me thing of a pelican. I know, I'm weird. It's very nice, uber sharp, The thing sliced through the fat on the tri tip like a lighsaber through a stormtrooper.

The jimping on the spine is nice and helps with grip, the jimping on the liner lock is pretty good too, a nice little added touch. I wish my buck had some.

So, as an overview..I like it. Its a good knive, a cool grind on the blade, nice. I hope that Kabar does some more work with Bob Dozier. I know they have a bigger slipjoint called the Big Easy but that one doesnt interest me. I hope the someday do a micarta handle version if the Folding Hunter with a linerlock. I would love to own one like that too. :)

Hope ya liked the review of my new buddy. I'll add some pictures later on. Its dark out and I have a steak to eat.

Catch y'all later! :D

Nice mini reveiw JakeSnake. I did not realize it had been discontinued. I always planned to pick up one but so far I haven't. Guess I better get on the ball and try to find one.

Great review!!! I've always stopped and stared but the tip down kept me from pulling the trigger. After reading your review that will now change. I love Micarta and have no doubts when it comes to AUS 8.

Thanks again,

Paul

I love my Phat Bob. Not the prettiest knife (due mostly to the recessed alternate clip placement area) But I don't list pretty in any of my cutting tool requirements so it's OK.
Hell -if it's discontinued I might have to get a backup.

Yep...love my Phat Bob. I have lots of spendy folders and it still finds its way into my pocket.

It has been in my pocket off and on since I got it. I am still on the fence about the tip down but still i like it. Of course in the regular swing of things I had to take it apart and see what it's guts look like. Good construction, I actually like that the pivot isnt exposed, The back spacer is seamless with the liners too, very nice.

The knife is a great slicer, I did some rope cutting and used it for some more food prep after when I made some salsa. Even after using it for about a week and then cutting a bunch of thick rope it sliced through some tomatoes pretty well. About half way through the salsa prep I stropped it a bit and it was a razor again. I am beginning to like AUS8 again. I own an Ontario Rat 2 also and that has the same blade steel. Love that sucker too. I only wish that the Rat2 came with a micarta handle, that would be sweet!

The only thing that I did to the knife thus far was take some linseed oil and rub the micarta a bit, It helped to even out the color on the cutaway parts like the spot for the clip and the thumb stud. The cutaway for the clip is less noticeable now.

When I got the Phat Bob I actually got two of them just as a precaution since I found out that they are discontinued. I might think about letting one of them go at some point. I don't think that I will beat up the main one enough to need a secondary.

Have a great weekend Y'all. Stay safe and enjoy the little things!
