So, I have been on the endless search for a good "weekend edc", I say weekend because I spend my days as a marketing graphic designer in an office full of people who would probably freak out if I pulled out a big knife to open something. I carry a custom designed small Buck Vantage Pro in the office. (Thanks Spketch for the kick ass Koa Handle) While I love the Vantage design, I find the small one is a bit small for my "weekend" tasks such as hiking and bbqing, and the big one is a bit large for my tastes as well. Anyway, I find that a 3" blade hits the sweet spot. SO, My weekend edc is usually an Enzo Birk 75 in S30V with a CF handle. I love love love that knife. On a Whim though, I picked up a recently discontinued Kabar Phat Bob for a rediculously low price.
I can say that I am thoroughly impressed so far. Mr. Bob Dozier is a well known and very talented knife designer and you can certainly see it in this design. I just got it today and love it alwready. Grat ergos, great blade grind and very good overall feel. I used it to chop some brussel sprouts for dinner prep and trimmed a tritip steak as well, which is currently sizzling on the grill behind me...Damn that meat smells good.
So, back to the review. I don't have all the specs on me at the moment but...It has a 3" AUS 8 blade, linerlock, tip down carry (I prefer tip-up), and a very nice polished OD green Micarta Handle. I love micarta.
The knife rides pretty darn low in the pocket and is actually not that noticeable in a pair of jeans amazingly enough. The weight isn't a big issue for me either. I am a 6'6" guy after all, small knives look weird in my hands.
The blade is deployed by a right hand only thumb stud and comes out with am authoritative "thwack!" If you are ever worried about opening it in public though, it is easily opened slowly which muffles the sound. I have heard some complaints about the thub stud being hard to reach because of a small cutout...I dont have the problem, I have big hands too (size large gloves).
As far as the blade goes, It is a 3" drop point with a hollow grind... It for some reason makes me thing of a pelican. I know, I'm weird. It's very nice, uber sharp, The thing sliced through the fat on the tri tip like a lighsaber through a stormtrooper.
The jimping on the spine is nice and helps with grip, the jimping on the liner lock is pretty good too, a nice little added touch. I wish my buck had some.
So, as an overview..I like it. Its a good knive, a cool grind on the blade, nice. I hope that Kabar does some more work with Bob Dozier. I know they have a bigger slipjoint called the Big Easy but that one doesnt interest me. I hope the someday do a micarta handle version if the Folding Hunter with a linerlock. I would love to own one like that too.
Hope ya liked the review of my new buddy. I'll add some pictures later on. Its dark out and I have a steak to eat.
Catch y'all later!
