Pheasant hunting opens this Saturday ! Is anyone else going to be knocking down roosters this weekend? I Am extra excited as I plan on taking my German wirehair pointer out for some bird work this trip. Nothing in hunting birds , is as rewarding as having your own dog point , hold, flush, and retrieve game. Since my dog is still young I will be happy if we get two of these actions down. I will try and get some good pics.

I will be out in Eastern CO this weekend for the CO Pheasant opener. I'll be leaving in the morning to do a little bit of scouting tomorrow before opening morning. My chocolate pointing lab will be going with me as usual. I hunted a LOT of years without a dog. I don't know what the heck I was thinking. As soon as I got a house, I got a dog too. Here's a pic. from last year:

^^Nice Rem 1100. I've got mine from 1982 that still shoots like new. Shot a bunch of doves with it this year.

Thanks Planetcat! I love that gun! It's a 3" Magnum reciever with a modified choke barrel. I'm not sure what year it was made off of the top of my head, but probably right around '84. It's a bit heavy compared to some of the newer autos, but it WORKS everytime (if I do my part and clean it every once in awhile)! That is all I can ask of it!

My dad has a much older one which ran extremely well and shot hundreds of birds until last season. We bought some new shells, and they proved too hot for it. The extractor claw kept coming out of the bolt. We got a bunch of new parts and overhauled the action. It now works great again!

If mine took 3" shells, it would have been my first and last shotgun I would have ever bought. I've bought 5 or 6 magnum receiver shotguns, mostly for ducks, over the years only because my 1100 is the 2-3/4" receiver. I like my 1100 so much, I even took my Winchester SX2 to the gunsmith with my 1100 and told him to cut and shim the Winchester stock so it was the same exact dimensions as the 1100. Still not the 1100 though. Best of luck this year.

Hope eveyone had a good weekend of hunting!!! We kicked the birds' butts!!!

This is how we had done by 11am opening morning!!! (we had a decent sized group)

Cleaning them up.

Great looking bag of birds. Congrats on a good opener. Looks like nice pheasant country you hunt them in and good weather.

seriously. thats nice... the pheasant population in NC is crap now. they had been over hunted for eons. now you have to go shoot the caged ones if you want to "hunt" them... blah

Thanks guys! The group I was with must have found the good fields, because I've since talked with a number of others who hunted in the same general area and didn't do nearly as well. I made jerky out of four of the birds I brought home yesterday, and it turned out GREAT! In fact, I'm munching on some right now.

I'll be back at it this next weekend (Thanksgiving weekend Christmas shopping is for chumps! ;))

edit: LMAO! I just noticed I have the same shirt on in the above pictures as I did in the picture from last year! Lol!

Good god man, you guys killed all the birds and didn't leave any for the rest of us!!!!!! I went out to Brush and did not do nearly as well. I am thinking about going out again next week on a week day to try my luck again. Nice pictures as well!

We planned to go out this past weekend, but the 40mph winds told us to stay home. Maybe next weekend.

Did someone say pheasants?

Numbers are way, way down in my neck of the woods, but I still have a ton of fun working the dog and shooting a couple here and there.

Hows that bk 11 work out as a hunting knife?

I was leary at first, but am very pleasantly surprised. It is nimble enough to get into tight spaces and plenty stout to chop the legs and wings if you so desire. I've done everything with it, except clean a deer, that will change this weekend, even if I have to volunteer to do someones for them.

I went out again this Wednesday , the birds were few, but the weather was still gorgeous ! I forgot to take any pics. Here is my field knife, a Tom krein tk11! We were blessed with 4 inches of the white stuff, I imagine the birds will be holding pretty tight. They flew pretty early this last trip. I think they are gun shy.
I might head out east again this weekend for another run.

i would love to do something like pheasant hunting but around here they are hard to find wild. i remember as a kid we could hear them but the past 20yrs or so, i have not heard a single bird. my dad used to tell me stories about when his dad took him and his brothers. now you have to go find caged birds and shoot them... no fun.

that is very sad to hear...is the lack of birds due to urban sprawl?..predators?..lack of habitat or what??...here in New Zealand nearly every rural paddock sports a cock pheasant.....FES
