my old 118 has a really dry dull looking handle, and i was curious if there was anything in particular i could apply to it, or is it just a lost cause?

If it is just "dull" and not roughed up, Renaissance Wax would probably shine it up well.

It is some amazing stuff. Most waxes would probably work actually.

the handle can be polished ...
or buffed up with a wheel or by hand
buck uses a big buffing wheel in side a covered machine

Send it back to Buck for a sharpen and buff. Plum sent me Buck DVD on history and a factory tour-they have a couple different buff processes that would bring it right back.
Cost ya 6.95

Back in the early 1980's Buck actually included in the box with the knife a small foil packet of Flitz to be used to shine the handles of their 110's and 112's . I've used it on laminated birch handles of a 124 and it works . DM

Most of the time we can bring back the original factory shine or something really close. About the only time we cant is if the handle is dull due to exposure to lots of light and or moisture. It takes a LOT to hurt those handles though so hopefully we can take care of it if you decide to send it in.

thanks guys, i actually tried Armor-all this afternoon and polished the heck out of it just to see if it would work, and im pretty pleased with the results. i spent a couple hours with the Lansky set last night because it needed a sharpening (i guess i hadnt checked in awhile, and DANG DID THAT OLD GIRL GET SHARP!) so i figured while i was at it id see if there was anything i could do to make the handle look better. i appreciate all the responses

btw, its been a kitchen knife for years now, and i originally thought that might have been the factor. i wasnt sure if dishsoap was the culprut. anyway, it will no longer be in the block and im going to continue my search for a sheath at a reasonably affordable price. that was most the reason it ended up in the kitchen anyway, the lack of sheath.

it has 4 of the fiber spacers, can anyone at least give me an estimate on its age/era? im a student of these knives, and feel SOOOOO overwhelmed at times with the Buck history. ive gave up all my other brands except Becker/Kabar, so im trying, but WOW theres alot out there to learn. there was a thread on 119 comparisons and its stamped like the middle one, but has the spacers like the first...?????

That really should have the Micarta spacers, Woody......and if the stamp is upside-down, it's a 72. If the stamp is right-side up (read point up) it's 73-80.

If you have the fiber spacers, that's a bit odd. I know the Two-liners had fiber in 67-69.

So, really.....you should see some grain or lines in the spacers to indicate Micarta.
