So I always wanted a Pheonix, and recently I got on eBay to see what's there. Apparently, it's all red-scaled models, and the posts say those red ones are sprint runs. I always wanted to white one. So is the white-scaled one a sprint too or was that the OG and it's harder to find?

The white scaled version was the original. I always wanted one as well...among many other knives. The red one is the rather recent sprint version.

Grizz

Cool, guess I can get the red and just make my own scales? I wonder how easy it is to make mother of pearl ones.

The ivory micarta Phoenix was the original, available from 2008-10.. tracking one down now is going to be a lot more difficult than finding the newer version. The red G10 sprint was released in 2021 to commemorate the passing of its designer, Howard Viele. Shop around, they can still be found in stock at retailers for well under the $315 MAP price..

But is the frame still titanium and the back spacer steel like in the original? If so I will get the new one and make new scales.

Keep in mind the scales on these are contoured and not just rounded at the edges, so that might be a little tricky to make on your own. I always thought these were underappreciated; people looked down on them at the time due to the blade/handle ratio or small finish issues, etc and they ended up getting cleared out at heavy discounts. But practicality be dammed, they look so nice in person. Mine is my favorite Spyderco I've ever had and one of my favorites in my collection.

I saw one two weekends ago and was surprised at how nice they feel in the hand. They look like a Dodo with a Manix 2 blade but they are hefty because of the thick Ti frame and just feel and look really sweet. That's why I now want to bite the bullet and nab one, but get cooler scales.

I think with my sawing, sanding, and having several grits of polishing wheels I can make scales with MoP, and make the screw holes easily. Just got to nab the knife first.
