I checked out Phil Hartsfield's bio on wikipedia and it says he differentially edge hardened his knives. Here's the link. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phill_Hartsfield Now, I think he used mostly A2, which is an air cooled steel. I'm wondering how or if it's true that he differentially hardened A2. I thought that it was near impossible to differentially heat treat air cooled A2?

Many have said they can do it, still waiting for them to produce a hamon on A2

He was pretty tight lipped but there was a video on swords were he mentioned using metal heat sinks in his heat treatment.

There was only 1 to 2 points difference from the spine to the edge.

One thing that can be seen is he did not use foil wrap on his blade.
