Do any forumites have any experience with Phil Wilson knives. I am looking at getting one of his knives for hunting use. He seems to have all of the requirements that I am looking for in my Quest for the best.

Hidden Tang ( I am not a big fan of slab sided handles. )
S90V steel. ( tough and rust resistant )
nice user blade shapes ( I will need to choose between semi skinner and drop point to start ),

Let me know your thoughts, I have the urge :) :)

Thanks,
Dave.

I'm in the process of having one made by Phil at this time, in CPMS90V. Cliff's prior testing of the Coyote Meadow prompted the purchase. I expect to see it late Feb. or early March. Phil is a real gentleman and great to deal with!

Treadwell - Let me know how you like it. Which one did you order? How long was his lead time?
Thanks,
Dave.

Mine will be what Phil calls a South Fork, the same blade shape as his Coyote Meadow, but with a handle similar to the Meadows Semi-Skinner on his web site. I was looking for something purely functional, but with the absolute best edge holding properties available in today's "super steels". Having a Mondt custom in CPM10V already, I decided, at Phil's urging, to have my next custom done in CPMS90V, almost on par with 10V in edge holding, but with the added benefits offered in stainless. I wanted one done by Phil at the time I ordered the Mondt, but there was a year wait at that time, hence I elected to go with Mondt with a 3 month wait. This time around Phil had only a month lead time, and I took advantage of my good fortune post haste!

Doug Mondt and I worked together to come up with what I considered the "perfect knife" for my personal needs. Ironically it was the first one he ever made in this configuration, and has since turned out to be his most popular seller! He calls it GMC 4" Hunter.

Dave,

We have three of Phil's knives. They all have S90V blades. One of the knives is a skinner.

I highly recommend Phil's knives. He makes his knives to cut! They cut like crazy. We've used the skinner extensively in the kitchen and it works great. Kitchen use is a good way to test the ergonomics, cutting ability and edge retention of a knife.

I have used a Coyote Meadow in 10V at 62.5 hrc for years, outstanding ergonomics, cutting ability, ease of sharpening and edge retention. Wilson does a lot of R&D on his knives including working with the heat treating to optomize performance.

I first met Phil about ten years ago, I haven't made a fillet knife since. Phil has been the guy to work with and understand CPM steels. His grind geometry is very good. He makes a light weight ergonomic designs. Phil is definately one of the good guys and a nice man...Take care...Ed

Thanks for all of the great input. I'm leaning toward the semi-skinner. Looks like his work is a winner. Anyone have this design?

Thanks,
Dave.
