Philosophical question about a military service ring ...

Howdy all,

For some time now I've been wanting a nice gold ring. I don't want something "fashionable". I'd prefer it to have some meaning. Lately I've been thinking of buying a military service ring (class ring style, 10K + stone).

Are there any customary rules about who's "entitled" to wear them? What I mean is, I didn't retire from the Army and it's not a part of my life now. I did two years on active duty when I graduated from high school (20+ years ago) then got called up from inactive reserve to active duty for a month or so for Dessert Storm (it ended before we finished refresher training).

Part of me thinks anyone who served has earned the "right" to wear a service ring. Part of me wonders if they're better left for those actively serving and retirees (part of me knows that I'm way overthinking this ;) ).

Any thoughts would be appreciated...

I'd say you've earned the right....go for it.

You were in the Army, wear the ring. Be glad you weren't a Pirate...you'd have to wear the ring in your ear!

Go for it... Someday soon, I'll be getting a custom ring. Won't be Army related though. My tattoo of a CIB is all I need.

Go for it, brother. You earned the right. You served honorably, and they even wanted you back! :)

I saw kids get them when they graduated from basic, thought they were hot shit because they "survived" Sand Hill. When I get home from this hell hole I'll prob get my CAB over the entire Psalm 91 tattooed and a ring for the deployment.

Lol, forgot to say... go for it brother. When we made the choice to give our lives for our country, we earned the name Soldier and every "right" that goes with it. No matter how long you gave, you can't get that back, and you were part of a brotherhood that extends back 236 years. We're blood brothers! If a ring is something that helps you to keep that bond, by all means, go for it. Thank you for your service!

If you did the military thing, you get to wear the military ring.:)

As a veteran, I would say that you've earned the right to wear it, so go for it. I don't personally wear a service ring, but I certainly respect anybody who chooses to.

Ditto... I'm a retired Vet with 20+ years and I see no issues. Wear it proudly.
