Phone Call From a Vendor?

I received a phone call today from a vendor that I have made purchases from in the past. I live in California and the vendor wanted to inform me that a knife purchased is now affected by a new state law. They mentioned that they would accept returns or exchanges of said knife which happens to be Cold Steel's Drop Forged Wasp Fixed Blade. I know of no current or new legislation that would cause any concern regarding this blade other than it has to be worn in plain view and not concealed when carried. Did anybody else get such a call recently?

Bizarre.

That knife is not illegal in California, not even close. And there aren't any new state knife laws in California either that would make it illegal.

Who's the vendor?

Besides the offer to accept a return or exchange they mentioned a third option, for me to destroy the knife. I said sure that I would take care of it. I have no intention of doing anything like that to a perfectly good knife. It was as though they would be somehow liable if the knife were used in any illegal manner including mere possession!

Sounds "scammy". A call and just "they" and no leg. to read? And then an offer?

It is not an uncommon occurrence for knife vendors to be complete morons when it comes to knife laws. There are numerous examples of vendors have restrictions on their websites that have no basis in law, or are based on wild misinterpretations, such as confusing restrictions on concealed carry with mere possession. To be charitable, knife laws are not always easy to understand, but I hate when vendors get the tiniest whiff of a legal issue and decide to outright stop selling to a particular state.

You can own whatever kind of knife you want in California, except for the ballistic knife of course. It's the carrying in public that falls under different laws, and I'm not aware of any recent legislation that has affected what knives you can carry.

There was an anti-shark CO2 gas knife called the Wasp. I bet the vendor has a grubby list of No-No knife names or is misremembering a purchase gone bad years ago.
