My Pinnacle has plastic washers (Nylatron?). Can I substitute Phosphor Bronze washers? Would this be an upgrade? I am worried about wearing away the titanium scales. Where can I get some Phospher Bronze or other "better" washers?

I've just been browsing through the archives at the messages about the EDI genisis knives which are equipped with phosphor bronze washers. Everyone that posted credited the P-bronze washers for the slick action. I wouldn't worry about the Titanium liners, even they are harder than P-B, the phosphor bronze washers also seem to eliminate the need for lubrication at the pivot. Unless the blade is teflon coated it would be worthwhile to find out. So.... does anyone know where to get 'em

Nylon washers (and bearings) are self-lubricating, too, and noted for good slick action. I dunno ... I wouldn't expect any improvement from replacing them.

By improvement, I meant more stability, less rocking of the blade from side to side. I thought the PB might deform less. What does Reeve use in the Sebenza and why?

Reeve uses metal (looks like bronze)
washers.

EDI uses bronze too-they had some problems with teflon swelling and have found that although phosphor bronze wears slightly, it also allows for less flex than nylatron since it doesnt compress.

Nylatron is great, but it will deform or tear sometimes. Bronze will wear slightly over time.

Like everything in the knife world, its a tradeoff.

Yeah, opinions definitely vary on this issue.

I've talked to a few people -- including that great liner lock maker I did a profile on a while back -- who swear by bronze over nylatron. The various problems I've heard about with nylatron include everything Anthony Lombardo mentioned. Since liner locks tend to be particularly sensitive to torquing, bronze makes a lot of sense to me, as it won't compress as much and you shouldn't see as much movement as the tang.

P.B. definately compresses less and still gives smooth action. As for where to get..
R. B. Johnson Clearwater MN. Has an abundance of folder makings. I'll have an address and phone later today.
