Hello,

Recently, I have been looking for a source of phosphor bronze for bushings. However, there are a few different standards for phosphor bronze compositions, as well as what appears to be different heat treatments. Additionally, it has been difficult to find information related to the properties of the different alloys and heat treatments. What are your recommendations for phosphor bronze bushings?

Thanks

MSC Industrial Supply will probably have what you are looking for...SAE 841 Bronze Rod or SAE 660 Bronze. For your purpose either one will offer the strength you need. As i recall the 841 comes in smaller diameter less machining.

To be honest I think you'll be hard pressed to tell any performance difference between the alloys in this application. I wouldn't use an oil bearing bronze as you'll never heat the bushings up enough to get the benefit.

You're right on performance but the 841 was less expensive and came in smaller diameter rods so a little less waste. I don't want to turn a 1/2" down to a quarter if I can just get a 1/4" to begin with. That's of course assuming he is not needing a 1/2" to begin with?!

Busto Busto yep I hear ya. I was directing that more towards how I perceived the OP's desire to use the perfect alloy.

McMaster has a really good selection of cast bushings that would likely work for the project as well.

When I can find what I need on the shelf I don't even consider machining that's just one more time consuming step!!!

Try looking at Boston Gear's catalog. they have a huge assortment of plain bronze bearings down to 1/8(?) I had no idea they made them until I went looking for a backgear to install a foot pedal on my Buffalo drill press.
