Annie Moore, the first immigrant to set foot on Ellis Island

Photographs of the first immigrant to arrive at Ellis Island have been discovered.

Annie Moore disembarked on the small island in New York harbour on January 1, 1892, on her 15th birthday. The girl from Ireland was the first of about 12 million immigrants to pass through the island between 1892 and 1954.

In the pictures, found by relatives, Ms Moore is a matronly figure. She is believed to have had at least 11 children. The photographs are inscribed on the back with “Ma Schayer”, Ms Moore’s married name.

My wife visited Ellis Island a few years back, and had a rather emotional experience viewing the statue of Moore there as a young girl.
Her grandmother had gone through almost exactly the same experience, arriving from Ireland at age 14 or so, alone and with only a few pieces of jewelry wrapped in a handkerchief. She said the statue reminded her so strongly of her grandmother that it brought her to tears.

A few years ago I decided to see if there were any records of my grand parents in the Ellis Island archives. I found both grand mothers, my father and some of my aunts. What I found was kind of interesting. I was told long ago that they came from Kiev and St. Petersburg. The documents show them for Riga.

One story that I was told was that my maternal grandmother had tickets on the Titanic, but one of my aunts got the measles and would not have been allowed into the US. She traded tickets with another couple who had tickets on the Mauritania. The dates on the manifest substantiate the story. Hmmmm. If it wasn't for the measles I wouldn't be here to entertain you. :p

Here's the manifest of the Mauritania on 19 Jul 1912. If your ancestors came to the US through Ellis Island you may be able to find the records on their site.
