This just arrived in the Mail today it is a rare photo sample 153 UH (000).
I immediately pulled out my other 153 UH and noticed alot of differences. ive marked them on photo below.
The finger guard is smaller on the photo sample and the handle is 4mm shorter.

I would really like to know if its carbon steel or stainless and year?? It hasnt got the plus on the tang which normally designates it as stainless but doesnt look like carbon to me. Blade is thicker.
Michael??

The bottom knife is the photo sample. The lightgreen dots are a mistake.

I've mentioned before that older 153UH parts don't interchange with the later knives, and doubtless you are illustrating that. Here is the best I can come up with at the moment, a transcription of a document date December 2, 1994.

At this time, we should be blanking the last of our .165 or thicker carbon steel that has been allocated for the 153UH. After this Steel is blanked, we will be switching to .135 thickness stainless.

******* and ***** have been asked to balance guards to the number of blades blanked. By copy of this memo, I am asking this be completed no later than 12/9/94.

Unless ******* advises that additional time is needed, please proceed immediately thereafter with changing the guard slot for the thinner stock. Our 1995 forecast requires almost 1,000 finished knives per week, and on this pattern we cannot afford production gaps. Therefore, please make this a priority project and advise ASAP when we should anticipate completion.

We will also need thinner cores for the handle mold.

If there are any questions, please advise.

"Of mice and men" comes into play. In this case, it is evidenced by a subsequent update memo dated May of 1995.

The 153UH blade is being changed to stainless steel. Following is the status of the various tooling changes.

1. GUARD

Slot to be changed to .134 +/- .002. NOTE: New blade stock will be .135 and finished down to .128/.130. ***** ***** Products should have the guard tool modified by June 19, 1995 with production approximately two (2) weeks after that.

2. TANG STAMP

Drawing being revised to add "+" after Schrade and copies will be given to Production Control by 5/5 for ordering stamps.

3. BUTT PIECE AND WASHERS

In-house changes for these parts are complete.

4. HANDLE MOLD CORES

Tool Room will modify existing cores. This should be completed by May 24th or sooner.

A letter from the Schrade Engineering Services Manager dated July 27th, 1995 to the tooling company, ***** ***** Products, indicated that the guard tool was still not yet completed.

Thanks Michael, thats correct I was, but I was also not sure if some of the differences on my 153 uh were just due to it being pre-production photo sample and I wondered if at least one of the changes highlighted may not have entered into regular production?

From the VERY detailed info you have given I know it is carbon steel, I know that changes to stainless were made in 1995? Im not sure what year the carbon one was made.

Would it have been made just after serial numbers on the Carbon steel 153 uhs were ceased from production or were there a few other changes which makes it a latter version??

Thanks Again Tim
