Photo Size Question

What is the maximum size pics that I can post? The reason I ask is because I generally use full size pics as my source and the site resizes them, which is great, but I see other members posting larger pics that show more detail, which I prefer. So, if I were to resize my pics to a specific size (larger than what the auto resize makes them but much smaller than full size), what size would that need to be?

EDIT:

I just noticed that even some of my own posts end up with varying size pics. This one, which is the size I prefer, and this one, which is smaller than I like.

This is the original source for the first, and this is the original source for the second.

I would say keep the picture reasonable. Posting a huge picture something like 1500x1500 or larger is just as bad as posting thumbnail sized images. Most people do alright, but there is always someone out there every once in a while that goes crazy with giant sized billboards. It makes the posts harder to reply to and a pain to read.

I completely understand the annoyance of the full size pics. If they showed up that large I would size them down. I was just trying to figure out why some would show up as a half sized pic for the page and some would show up as what I think is a normal size (full width without having to side scroll).

I did notice that the ones I was referring to about being small earlier are now a different size. Not sure if you guys tinkered with em or it was some sort of bug that caused it in the first place.

I resize my pics to 750 pixels or 650 pixels wide in order to 1) cut the filesize and speed the upload to Photobucket and 2) have a reasonably detailed pic. You can right click photos and check properties to see what size posted images are if you are curious. I think that around 950 - 1,000 pixels goes full page width in posts and that the site would apply some compression to keep larger pics within the page width display. Off the top, that's my take on this matter. Good luck. Pics sure make the site interesting and informative.

I've started resizing all mine to 900 wide. I used to leave them the full size (4000 pixels), because they never showed up as humongous pictures on my pc, but I wasn't sure if they were on other people's screens. I have very wacky display settings on my computer because I use a 32" tv for a monitor. I have my dpi turned way up, fonts resized, resolution adjustments, and web browser zoom just to be able to see things properly from 10-12 ft away in my recliner. If any of my previous pics were obnoxious in size, I apologize, that was not my intention.

If someone could explain how to use "thumbnails" instead of one link at a time.
Lots of times I see smaller pics put into a box and after clicking one of these thumbnails a bigger 1of4 then from there "next 2of 4 and so on.

I'd like to incorporate a batch of pics from PHOTOBUCKET in one link and I suspect that this is how it is done.
Just how can I end up with a batch of those small pics that need really to be opened inside BFC here to be aptly viewed.
Plus I like that the viewer (me) can move through them and this way
Takes up much less space than the "other" way. Plus might be easier to get a batch into the BF thread.
