Photobucket causing new advertisement tabs to open

I know that a lot of pics get posted here from Photobucket, so I thought I would pass this along.

For a couple of weeks now, I have been experiencing strange and unwelcomed new tabs seemingly randomly popping up on my browser (Chrome). Each tab is for "Ali Express" or some other random advertiser. I ran all of the anti-malware and anti-virus scans that I could, but no luck. I did interweb searches on how to stop this stuff, to no avail. Then I figured out that visiting Photobucket was the culprit. Almost every time I go to Photobucket, I get a new advertisement tab popping up. Seems to be just a slimy way of generating revenue.

This is just an FYI for those of you who use Photobucket, and are getting unwanted tabs popping up. Maybe you'll save a few days trying to figure out why its happening. Rock on.

I noticed this a few weeks ago with Photobucket..Pretty close to dropping that crappy photo-sharing site myself and moving on to imgur or similar.

I haven't been getting pop ups but I've had other issues with Photobucket the last month or so.

Previously, when I type the address into the browser it wouldn't go to the site, it would redirect me to some anti virus place that was very suspect. That was a few weeks ago. Tried it today and it sent me to a different one yet similar. The second time I tried it redirected me to Facebook.

If I go to Google and then type Photobucket and then go through the link provided it works just fine.

I have been using Adblock for since last year sometime and love it.
I believe it was because of Photobucket.
It shows blocking over 20 ads on Photobucket when I just opened it.

I use Adblock Plus and Firefox as well, I hate popups and advertizing. Adblock makes YouTube watchable.

Do any of you having trouble with Photobucket use Adblock?

When using Chrome, Photobucket + Adblock still allows Photobucket to open a new advertising tab. But ads within Photobucket are suppressed. Its not the end of the world to get a new tab, because at least now I know what is causing it.

In remotely related news, I learned also that Google Photos gives you unlimited photo storage. I'm not a fan of the whole Google empire for a number of reasons, but having a secondary or tertiary place with unlimited storage to backup photos is nice.

I use Chrome and Adblock. I haven't been using pictures for a while. I just went to Photobucket, selected an image, which opened it in a second tab where I clicked on IMG. Then I deleted the second tab and found the first tab I opened was now an AliBaba ad. Not a problem, just a nuisance.

I use Chrome and Adblock as well.

I often open several tabs and/or windows at once when browsing, and especially when viewing/selecting pictures within Photobucket to include in a post here on Bladeforums.

I recently started seeing the above behavior as well, although it took me a while to realize that Photobucket was the culprit-- I'd go to close multiple tabs, and discover an Alibaba tab/page within the mix.

A search of various online discussions of similar phenomena (if not specific to Alibaba or even tabs) led me to this string:

||cherytso.com^$popup,third-party">||cherytso.com^$popup,third-party

Copy the above. Open Adblock ("Options" at the bottom of the Adblock menu after clicking on its Stop Sign icon), then click the Add Your Own Filters tab.

Paste the above string, then click Add Filter to save it within Adblock.

I've not encountered extra Photobucket tabs/advertising since; hopefully this is more than a coincidence.

Hope this helps.

Looks like it just worked for me! Thank you. :)

Yep.

I had some issues a while back with a pop-up on Photobucket (in Chrome), even WITH Adblock enabled. Occasionally, another tab would open up with some (supposed) link to Xfinity (my ISP) with a 'survey' or 'poll' of some type. Another pop-up was more worrisome, in that it claimed my computer had been exposed to some malware of some sort, and prompting me to visit their site for a 'fix' (a sucker play, I'm sure). As I recall, I had to modify some settings within Chrome, to not allow plug-in content to run automatically (changed it to 'ask' if/when to run, instead of allowing all the time); might've also changed other settings as well. Whatever the case, it seemed to nip all those issues in the bud. Couldn't help but shake my head, that the PhotoBucket admins would allow this sort of thing to keep occurring via their site. I have a lot of photos on their site, and use it to post & link all the images I've posted on BF, so I haven't tried to relocate it all (yet), else I'd have to re-link everything I've posted here. That said, when I do still use PhotoBucket, I keep activities on their site to the absolute minimum needed, and then immediately close all windows/tabs to their page. I don't really trust them anymore, and that's sad.

Photobucket has earned my active distrust (vs my former passive trust) given behavior such as you describe. Every time I put out one 'ad fire,' another arises, which could not happen were Photobucket not soliciting such implementations.

After posting earlier, and reading your earlier comments, I logged into PhotoBucket (via Chrome) just to see if there were still any issues. Lo and behold, there was that annoying extra Alibaba tab opened up. So, for good measure, I also copied & pasted that string you referenced (Thanks) into my Adblock filter list. I'm double-checking and tweaking my browser settings again as well. I'll keep my fingers crossed in the meantime (while I'm using the IE browser, this time).

'Active distrust' vs. 'former passive trust' is the perfect summation for my changed view on PB as well. Nicely put.
