Four days ago I got my M/C bill for photo point.
Today I am told they are closed for good and all files are lost.
Any other info out there?
Anyone else get burnt?
Isn't this fraud?

Glad I didn't bite. Youy should be able to get your money back from MC, you did not recieve the promised services.

I paid up about a month ago. Felt like it was the right thing to do, since I had enjoyed it free for so long.Another SUCKER born!!!!How did you find out it has gone South?:barf:

I'm in the same boat as you and AlaChochta. I paid up about 2 months ago and now have nothing to show for it. I switched to Sony Imagestation. It's way better and still free. No, I won't make the same mistake as with Photopoint. When they switch to pay, I will flee. I learned my lesson with Photopoint. But, have a look at Imagestation. It's a good short term fix for our problems. Here's the link.

You should still have around 60-90 days from the statement that a charge appeared on, to dispute the charge.

I can't believe something like this has happened! <p>I had over two hundred pictures in there, and now they are gone. They didn't even have the decency to let us know!

This is happening because people are panicking and causing more of a depression than is really necessary. Its just the way it goes as far as payments are concerned. Please don't cry so loud about $20/yr (right?). I have a reliable ISP that hosts my web site and they are not going under. I also don't force my users to see advertising, but for all of this, I pay $20/mo!

As for lost pics, I don't understand? You all took these pics with digital cameras right? Don't you have copies locally?

I hear class action lawsuit. Sounds like a golden parachute to me. The site was going under, and the owner wanted to get as much out of it as possible. They make members pay and then close down not even two months later! They knew that they were going to close, and took us all for the ride. Why do you think that they gave no notice or warning!

Max,

No, I won't make the same mistake as with Photopoint. When they switch to pay, I will flee.

Are you saying that sites that used to be free will bite the dust if they start charging??? BFC is a funny place to post such a sentiment!!!

(BTW: I'm still betting on the numbers and waiting for Spark's Life Time Membership...)

Michael

I bet they had no $$$, all investors have pulled out as the market tanks HARD, esp. on anything techy (goodbye, hopes and dreams!), they made a desperate attempt to generate capital by charging people but it wasn't enough to put them in the black. VERY shady just closing down w/o even an explanatory email, however - that sort of behavior guarantees there will be lawsuits. MEANWHILE, no worries regarding posting knife pictures, just spend a few bucks here to become a gold member. It's not the same as having a photo-album, true, but at least you won't have tomuck around with intermediary sites in order to post knife pics here. AND you'll be supporting the forums! We don't want them to go the way of photopoint , so c'mon people, pony up!

Testing new Imagestation program please ignore

Well, me too paid not so long ago :(
Crap, i don't have all of those pictures saved on my hdd, it crashed last summer and i lost some of my knifepics.

Really bad knowing that they are sinking and just keep up the cherry attitude.

Guys/gals, do i feel smoked!?

On the surface, at least, it kind of smells like fraud. All those affected by this should file a complaint with your local state attorney general's office. Almost all of them have a consumer affairs division. It won't cost you anything and may produce results.

Honestly I have a lot of grudge against them.

I have published here about two dozens of articles and uncounted posts with more than 300 images hosted by www.photopoint.com
Now all images are invisible and my work is not too much worth without them. Sure, I have a copies but they are among some thousands images I have in my photo library and on hard discs. Now I should found them, to find another image host, to put them there, to reedit all links in all my publications - wow! who have enough time and patience to do it all for $19.95???

In fact nothing threats them from my side, I'm too far and too busy to take any action against them. But if someone would have enough time, enough patience and, first of all, enough knowledge in American laws in this matter - I really would be glad to see how he or she would punish PhotoPoint's owners for their dishonesty.

No, I didn't necessarily mean it quite like that. I'm referring to all of the photo sites like Photopoint, Imagestation etc...

I don't feel bad about using Sony's free service because I own one of their digital cameras so I support them as a consumer. I don't expect the Sony site to go to a pay service or go under because they have some serious financial backing. But, if a site has to go from free to pay, it points to problems and that should warn you of imminent troubled water ahead.

I wouldn't hold my breath on that lifetime membership either C4. You'll just turn blue ;)

FWIW, I just called my credit card company and was informed that I can still contest the PhotoPoint charge even though I've already paid the credit card bill on which it appeared. After explaining the situation to the rep, I was advised to deduct the amount of the PP payment from my next credit card statement, and look for a letter in the mail. I sign the letter with an explanation of the reason for contesting the charge, send it back to the credit card company, they do battle with PhotoPoint, and I'm not out any money. Of course, I'm still hosed as far as the 250+ pics I had there (some of which were deleted from my HD) and all the links on various forums. Still, it was worth a call to an 800 number to get some partial relief.

Ah, I understand now, not necessarily pictures lost personally, but lots of now broken links, yes this is understandably frustrating. But the public net has never been (nor did it promise to be) a reliable medium. I've had to move the thrower mailing list 5 times in 6 years thanks to outfits going under or changing policies, or what ever. As for knowing that they were going under and still maintaining a cheery attitude, welcome to one of the primary requirements of senior management everywhere. To be able to smile to your employees and customers alike while you know that everything is falling apart. lying by withholding vital information is one of the hallmarks of a good manager and marketing rep. didn't you know...
