I have a couple of firefighter axes salvaged from an old engine that was being scrapped. These things are huge lol. Weighed the spike at 7 lbs 4ozs other at 6 lbs 12ozs. Is anyone familar with these axes? Are such large heads commonly in service? Cant see any markings under the numerous coats of red paint, they look pretty unused.

Those are really cool!

We have one at work, and like yours it's a heavy son-of-a-gun. I don't recall the weight but I bet it's at least 6 pounds. I'll try to remember to take a picture next week.

Yes, fire department axes are heavy. We typically use it like a sledge hammer as much as we use it as a cutting/chopping tool.
The weight is necessary to create huge amounts of force to break through doors/door frames, or chop through multiple layers of roofing material when venting a burning building.
We just received a brand new flathead axe that has an 8 lb head....now that things is a monster.
