Photos&Test concerns

Nobody seems to want to address this:
Spark posted a pic of the cutaway ATAK on Sept.27th.
This same cutaway ATAK(notch and all) is shown with the Busse 7" in a photo posted by Mike on Oct.24th.
This is supposed to be the ATAK from the test. I believe the test was done on Oct.24th.
Was the ATAK taped/glued back together for the test?
Or was the ATAK tested at a different date?
This has been questioned several times in the big thread going on, but neither Mike nor Spark has commented.
I'm not trying to question anyones honesty or motives, but I feel that this must be addressed.

"you see that mountain over there? near as i can figure, that's where we are!"

The knife in the picture also has (as was pointed out in the other thread) the straight grind line leading to the ricasso not the curved grind as is present in the more current models. I would conservatively guess that the knife is at least three years old.

At the very least, the knife should have been resharpened before the test. My knives sometimes seem to get duller as they sit around in the sheath.

I have used many Mad Dog knives MUCH harder than Mike did in his test and was still able to scrape hair with them after what I would classify as abuse.

Spark; didn't you say you had dove your ATAK at some point? I know that even a slight bit of corrosion will take some of the "pop" out of a very sharp edge.

Sorry about the delay, it's been a busy night.

Mike did the tests in two parts, with the first part being done before he went into surgery. CS, Mad Dog, Fallkniven and Busse I believe were tested on or around the 26th, then when the handles were cut off I scanned in the knives. I could have sworn that he made mention of the preliminary testing being done, I'll have to search back for it.

I do remember the Busse and MD knives being cut apart on the same day... Though I don't remember the exact time. I probably should have captured that on film since it would be a great demonstation on how long it would take. Busse took no time, Mad Dog took a while, we'll see how long a Mission takes during the next batch of testing. I'll definately photograph it the next time, which reminds me that we'll need to bring a bandsaw to the next tests.

The second, final part was done afterwards, last month, when he'd had time to recover. This consisted of the cardboard test and some of the others (not the chopping).

Derek, I don't own an ATAK, and I don't dive, so no, I didn't make that statement. The knives *did* all shave hair easily when we received them though (I had nice bare patches to prove it). I haven't tested the MD since the final tests, but I'll try it tomorrow.

Regardless, don't get me wrong here: The ATAK did very well in the tests overall, however IMHO the chipping and it's poor chopping were it's major drawbacks. It's a great fighter, just not a good utility knife, and the capillary action of the hard chrome combined with the O-1's "rustability" leaves me with great concern about it's durability, especially where the edge is. Since the time that the handle was cut away, the O-1 has started to rust and it's hasn't been out in the environment at all, just sitting in the office. I'll scan a picture tomorrow.

Derek, please do me a favor and give me a call tomorrow, I have a question for you that I'm wondering if you could help with, I'm trying to track down someone in the SDV community...

OK, I can see how the cardboard tests as described could be done with a chopped grip.

Kewl.

Yeah, that makes sense. I guess this clears up the "mysterious photo" issue. Maybe Mike Turber isn't part of the conspiracy after all.
