For the love of the irreverent, how in the heck do I put words on photos? I'm using Photoshop Elements 4.0 I get the picture up. Hit the Horizontal Text button. Move mouse to point I want the words. Type the words (which don't show up), hit the OK check mark on upper right corner. The text layer shows my comment in its own layer. But I can't see the comment on the photo or get it to merge and be visible on the photo.

How do I do it?

Elements is new to me. I'm VERY old School PS. Assuming Adobe designed the UI properly, you probably can't see the text for one of the following reasons:
1) The text layer is BENEATH the image layer (that should not be though, as the 'image' is a locked default layer, everything else gets stacked overtop.
2) You haven't assigned a color to your text so it's 'there' but not visible
3) Other reason that I should know but don't.
I also use Fireworks and depending on the 'mode' you're in, you may or may not be able to view text that you're typing

It could be the font color? What color of image/background do you have? From what you've said, you are doing it right. I use Photoshop all the time and it's pretty much the same in all versions, consumer and pro. I have Elements 5 on this machine for familiarity reasons and just brought it up and don't think there is any difference in that part compared to 4.0. It could be as simple as reversing your foreground/background colors or resetting the default....black on white. It shoudl be the last tool option in the toolbar on the left side of the screen.

It turns out that the pixels per inch was set ridiculously low; so after putting it to about 300 per inch, the letters worked fine. But at that point, I had already utilized the roflbot.
