Ok, I would like any pics of waved spydercos that were waved by cutting out some of the spyderhole, or any other homemade method except the zip tie. I was also curious if anmyone could possibly replicate the cobra hood on the ATR, except with a little extension on the front for a wave? I would like a waved ATR but I could do it myself. Thanks a bunch!

I have only done one ATR I think. It may be two I'd have to look. None of mine have ever been cut into the hole. I talked this over with Sal and after our discussion and after speaking with others I decided that was not the best course of action for several reasons. First off it is not necessary to make the Wave work and secondly it can weaken the blade considerably on some models and probably on all to some extent.

As for your metallurgical question. I am not a metallurgist but from a lifetime of working hard and unhardened steels I do have a lot of experience working it. Normally one would thread the mounting hole (s) for the "hood" before the blade was hardened. It can't be done at this time now that its hard. You'd just break off taps trying to thread it at this point. The only other way would be to fabricate a hood or have someone do it for you to mount kind of like you would a thumb stud by drilling through the blade and being able to run the screw through one side of the hood mount and thread it into the other side.

I'm not sure of your other questions or concerns but assume it has to do with maintaining the hardness of the blade if you cut into it to make a Wave mod on it. In a nut shell. Keep it cool. None of the blades I do are allowed to even get luke warm during the modification. I have a water cooled handpiece though but have done them without using that also.

I've had one blade I did early on Rockwell tested before the Wave and Rockwell tested again after and it came out the same both times. Keep it cool, don't let it get burn marked and you should be ok. Have patience and dip it in ice water often.

There are several pictures of Waved knives I've done on my thread in the Gadgets and gear for sale forum titled "Custom Low Rider Pocket Clips For Sale".

Lastly. It is possible to make a Wave out of a piece of metal bent about like a V and then mounted in to the same spot the hood is on the ATR. Then you could have a working Wave like that seen on the Cold Steel AK47 knife. This is possible to do on knives that have thumb discs instead of thumb studs or opening holes also. There is a man by the name of Demko that has the patent for this type of opening device. He does not call it the Wave and I do not have his permission to do them like I do the other type from Ernest Emerson.

Thanks

I can also email pics to you privately.

The holder of the patent like that on the AK47 is Andrew Demko. The patent # is 7036229.

Cheese and crackers...couple questions and a get an essay, incredible. Thanks for all the info, very educating (especially with tapping hardened steel). My main curiosity was wether anyone could fabricate a cobra hood identical to the first, except that it would have an extended portion on the front acting as a wave. If your ever bored you could email some mod pics to my_december99@msn.com :P Thanks for all the info!
