My dillema: Looking for a decent , inexpensive edc. Considering the Microtech mini SOCOM manual w/framelock, but im also considering others.

I want a knife with a strong lock, which is why im not as sure on the socom. Im thinking of a lockback aswell. This has lead me to the Spyderco native. My question for you people is if anyone can post a picture of their native 1, or 3 preferred. if they can post a picture with a penny beside it so i can see the width of the handles.

Also, in your opinions which is better for me? the native I, or the native III ----->

I want a knife thats pretty sturdy, not too big, not too heavy, decent steal, good to hold, but still keeps a low profile in the pocket. Which steel is better? vg10, or s30v?

I don't have a digital cam handy but go for the native I got one in S60V (then called CPM-440V) and it cuts like hell...

Here's a couple of pics that might help. Unfortunately I dont have one with FRN, just the G10 and the SS. That's a nickel in the picture, by the way. Couldnt find a penny.

Hope it helps.

lol danelle, dont see a nickel in that pic :D
edited to add: pic didnt load, now i see it

anyone have an opinion about the steels?//

Wish I had a photo to show you, however, in the recent past I have become a diehard William Henry collector/user. I have some of the expensive american made ones, and a few of the Japanese Evolution models. I find these knives (the Japanese ones) to be awesome. Check out www.Williamhenryknives.com to check them out. They are available with different handle options. Plus the blades are made of VG-10. Good luck.

uh ok but really my main question is about the native and the steel that it comes in, second, that website takes me to a photography site

Edit: Nevermind, I think there is a conspiracy against me trying to make a fool out of me.

Aaron,
I have both Natives (sorry, no pics). The 1 I have is S30V, it is very slim and has a nice edge (haven't needed to sharpen it yet). The 3 is my EDC. The 3 is definantely larger (not much but noticeably, almost like a Benchmade "Grip" in width). The VG-10 is great (I got a nice "bite" to prove that)! The difference also in the clips, makes the 3 seem more comfortable to me, easier to hold. I like both, but for the price of a 3 (a couple bucks more than a Delica!), I would recommend it.

thanks dfor the link, but lets stay with the native and the two steels. I dont mind paying a little more if that will lead me to a better pick. Once and for all, which will last longer, hold an edge better, in the native series

Properly heat treated and tempered, such as Paul Bos, the S30V will hold an edge longer than the VG10. I have blades in both steels and the difference is noticable.

walt, thank you for the answer, it was clear, bold, and the truth. Now, i only have to find out who heat treats spydercos.

I'd recommend you not beat yourself up over steels.

VG10 and S30V will both work just fine.

Just pick the knife that has the design you like more. Of those two choices offered I think I'd go for the Native 3 design.

You may also want to take a look at the Benchmade mini-Griptilian series. I find that the miniscule increase in weight is more than made up for by a stronger and generally superior design compared to the Spyderco lightweight series.

fishbulb. I trust the spyderco lockback series, i have a knife that uses it, i do however not trust the axis lock, as it has more fragile parts, that can break, which has been noted by several people on these forums.

Spyderco Native CRM 440V, FRN handle. This is an all-round great little knife. It has a very stout blade that tapers to a slim point. Perhaps someone will tell me what "type" it is and I will learn something. BTW FWIW the "toonie" ($2 coin) peeking out under the blade is 1 1/8" in diameter.

The native came out in G10??? Are those the two on the hand? S30V/G-10/blue handles? when did those come out?
