Can anyone post a close up shot of the blade on this knife?

Mike Kerins has a pic on his Yahoo site that made me think the logo may not be as unattractive as I first thought. I would love to see a closer picture of the blade and logo.

I like the fact that the scales are rosewood--different from your normal 110s.

The Bass Pro Buck knives in ATS-34 were phased out. Am seriously thinking about picking one of these up before/in case something similar happens at Cabela's.

Here's a good picture of the blade that Gary007 put up awhile back.

And more pic's of it here.

Gary007's pictures are some of the best I have seen.

Thaaaaat's what friends are fooooorrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

Those are nice photos!

I will add that the blade coating is not as dark or as noticeable "in real life." If you're not a knife person or looking for it, you might not notice that it's not just a satin finish on the blade.

Rhino,
I have to respectfully disagree with you on this. I'm looking at my Cabela's 110 right now and the blade couldn't get much blacker. It doesn't bother me a bit though, and if it really does inhibit dust, than great! It IS a unique look and not bad looking in my opinion. Just another variation of a great knife! :)

Those pictures are great --the rosewood really has a nice glow to it (in the pics and in real life).

Apparently there is significant variation in the end result. Mine is a pale gray, maybe light pewter color. No way is it black.

That's the only possible answer Rhino. I wonder if the variation has any effect on the way it performs?

I would never purchase this knife with a black coating to the blade. Anyone who says that it looks good must be blind . The coating ruins what would be a great knife. Is there anyway to remove it to make itlook like the original ?

You're assuming this is a finished blade that is then coated??? That may not be the case...if Buck knows it will be coated, they may not polish (or bead blast, or whatever) it...no sense doing work that will never be seen...

Aaahh Knifemaster....Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Do I prefer a standard finish to one with the black coating? Honestly, yes. That being said, I do not dislike the black coating. It's different, but not a bad look in MY opinion, and it has a function, which I would imagine is the reason Cabelas chose to have it applied.

I wouldn't, but the photo in the catalog doesn't look black to me and the one I got is nowhere near black. It's a light pewter color, not much different from the bare metal.

I'll disagree with that one... :D

I imagine the reason Cabelas chose it is to make it different from anyone else's 110's... ;)

If that was their intent then they certainly suceeded, however call me nieve, but I still believe the rust inhibiting characteristics was the primary reason. :p

But S30V is "Stainless Steel"; why add a coating to a blade that is corrosion resistant already??? :D

Quote: ..."with Crucible Steel pursuing the challenge of creating a new blade steel that is tough, corrosion resistant and readily workable. The product of their efforts is S30V, a stainless steel created with the knife market in mind"...

ChickenTrax,
You make a good point. Perhaps it is a general perception that they're trying to exploit for marketing the Alaskan Guide series of knives. Their site states...

"S30V is comprised of metallic powders fused together under intense pressure and heat. It is then tempered under extremely high temperatures. This process is quickly followed by a cooling cycle in a cryogenic freezer. The resulting metal delivers the absolute finest combination of edge retention (45% greater than 420HC), flexibility and hardness (59-61 Rockwell) while remaining easy to sharpen with conventional stones. This steel also exhibits a high chromium content for oxidation resistance. For even greater corrosion resiliency each knife has been treated with a Titanium Aluminum Nitride coating. Our field testing and independent C.A.T.R.A. (Cutlery Allied Trade Research Association) tests prove these knives will outperform those crafted with other blade metals."

We can only speculate as to whether or not they're just blowing smoke.
