I'm trying to decide on the handle material for a 110 custom and it's hard to tell from the small pictures on the site. I'd love to see some examples of actual knives people have ordered. What is the difference between a blade that says "Buck Custom" and "Designer's Choice"? Thanks in advance for any help or info!

Designers Choice was used on Custom Knife Shop orders up until a few years ago. Now the blade says Custom underneath the Buck inscription.

Personal preference, I'd say. I like walnut because it seems to be an American (and English) classic domestic wood of choice. But I've been thinking about getting a blue one with brass bolsters and 420 HC mirror blade to use around the salt water. A nautical looking knife.

The best answer, of course is "One of each".

Walnut 5th one down.

Walnut again 2nd down.

When did they change? I ordered a custom in the latter part of 2009 with the mirror polished blade and it has "Designers Choice" on the back side. I also have another one that I bought from someone else from 2009 or early 2010 and it's also marked "Designers Choice".

The ones I've ordered since, have all had S30V blades, so that logo is on the back side instead.

I'm looking at these pics on my phone so I can't see small details, do the S30V blades on custom knives have the Paul Bos heat stamp? Thanks for all the pics and info!

Rule #1.

Don't get a Custom without calling Buck direct and talking to the Custom Shoppe.

Only they will be able to tell you for sure exactly what's going on right now with stamps, materials, etc.

Get it from the horse's mouth.

Website has not always been exactly up to date with all the info.

Better safe than sorry.

I ordered a custom 110 a few years ago and the blade steel I asked for was out of stock so they substituted with S30v without telling me. I don't remember what steel I ordered but I didn't complain about it because S30V was an upgrade.

My custom 110 has sambar stag scales with nickel silver bolsters. It's a good looking knife. I don't have a picture.

That combo would be my first choice but I can't afford stag so I'll have to skip that. Thanks again to all for the info. If anyone out there has a picture of a blue handle example that would be great!

They didnt. I just got my first two customs and one side of the blade is marked "BUCK CUSTOM U.S.A" while the back side is marked "Designer's Choice"

EDIT: Both blades were oredered end of November 2010, and received in December 2010.

After reading Plumberdv's post again, I see he made reference to the back side of the blade as well. Just to carlify, both my customs ordered late 2010 were both stamped on the backside with designers choice, not on the front. Those are both just buck custom usa.

That's what I thought. The only ones I have that don't have Designers Choice on the blades back side are the one's with the Bos Logo and S30V where the DC stamp would have been.

You're right. I was thinking of the premium steels. The S30V knives to my knowledge do not have the "designer's choice" stamp.

A few years back I ordered one in BG-42 and when it arrived the paperwork said ATS-34 (it had been rumored that they were running out of BG-42 and they might have to substitute something else).

So, I was disappointed and a bit disgruntled.

So I unhappily pulled the knife out of the plastic sleeve and looked at the knife itself and...... there it was, stamped along the top left side of the blade.........BG-42.

I was beaming at that point.......who knows, I might have gotten the last BG-42 Custom 110 to ever come from Buck.

:D

Here's my blue 110 I got in November from the custom shop. 110 blue, NS bolsters, S30V, finger grooves and rivets. Sorry for the mediocre pics:
