I was wondering if anyone happened to have a picture (or related comments) of their 4 1/4" or 4 1/2" Mooremaker stockman closed shield side facing the camera.
The reason I ask is b/c I usually end up grinding the kick of the sheepsfoot down to lower it into the handle and make the knife more comfortable to handle. My other stockmen have had the nail nick of the sheepsfoot on the side of the spey blade and the sheepsfoot can be lowered a little without the spey completely covering the nail nick. However, on the Mooremaker it seems that the sheepsfoot's nail nick is on the side of the main blade and the main blade usually sits higher in the handle than the spey which means that I may not be able to lower the sheepsfoot enough to be comfortable. Since the knife is pretty expensive, I wanted to check with the forums to see what others thought before I bought one.
Thanks!

APS - sorry I can't post a pic, but I had the same issue with my Moore Maker 4 1/4 stockman. I was able to drop the sheepsfoot blade by dremmeling the kick without losing the nail nick behind the main blade. I just took a little off at a time and checked the result. My sheepsfoot and main blade now are pretty much equal in height when closed, and the nail nick on the sheepsfoot is about 90% exposed. And yep, it does make the knife more comfortable to grip. On the down side, filing the kick drops the backspring slightly into the handle when the blade is closed, so you lose that nice flush fit on the back of the knife.

I would tend to think that on these MM stockmans probably the sheepsfoot is considered to be the main/primary blade.
The large sheepsfoot blade compared to the long/slim california clip point seems to be overbuilt, and the sheepsfoot is definitely the most easily accessible blade.
MM are intentedly sold to be work knives, and probably it is the sheepsfoot which sees most of the use.

It would be nice to have an input from real Texan cowboys/ranchers/cattlemen who actually use their MM knives as a tool of their trade.

Rob,

That's exactly what I was hoping for! Thanks for the info. I don't think that the recessed sheepsfoot spring will bother me.

littleknife, I agree with your main blade concept. Having the nail nick on the same side as the main blade's makes it easier for most (I guess) to open - the arc of motion is definately more natural to me than it is when the nail nick is on the other side.

Here's a Mooremaker Stockman (5301) 3 7/8" in length. I really like the nail nick on the same side of the knife as the main blade. Ergonomically, as you said, it's superior.

LynnBob thanks for the pics!! That main blade sure does sit low and the sheepsfoot looks like the kick has enough extra steel to work with. Definately a nice looking knife. I guess you've gone and done it and now I have to get one.
