I'll do a detailed write-up on the knife in comparison to the RMD, ESEE-6, and a couple of others after spending more time with it, but I do already have a lot of photos to upload soon.
What do you think so far chiral? Is it all you had dreamed of? And I'm jealous of all this snow everyone's getting, we're probably not gonna see more then sleet and ice.
First impressions make me want to spring for a new GSO-10! The handle, the way it fills the hand entirely, makes it feel like you're "charging" the knife, if that makes sense? When you thrust/stab with it, it isn't the guard that keeps your hand moving forward so much as
the whole handle channeling all your muscle groups. This is NOT a broom-stick handle. It begs to be used
hard.
One negative is that, while I didn't feel the need to knock the shoulders off the edges of the 4.1 test knife, I think I'll need to here to give myself a more comfortable platform for my hand and thumb when choking up - it's a bit sharp. It's also sharp in the choil-region, which means you may be able to strike a ferro-rod there, but it's a bit less comfortable on the finger than the previous version.
It's bigger than the RMD? Wasn't expecting that...
Yeah, I lined them up at the index-grooves, but if you line them up at the blade-heels, the 5.1 is very distinctly larger. The previous version was as well. It's enough to be quite noticeable - makes the RMD feel small in comparison. Oddly enough, while the ESEE-6 is substantially larger, the 5.1
feels like a closer approximation to it than the RMD, as if it has the same reach and capacity for light-chopping, etc. that the ESEE-6 has. Oh, and if you've never handled an ESEE-6, that handle feels like you're holding a block of wood -
really uncomfortable the way it presses into the muscle groups :thumbdn: Modification or after-market scales are a "must".
By the way, edge thickness on that 5.1 is ~0.022" in the belly, and wonderfully even - Guy's perfectionism at work
With reference to the comments about wait-times, this knife was pre-ordered in April. Pre-order = investment, i.e. loan awaiting dividends. In every one of my reviews, I've commented on the wait times. Anyone who has done their research on S!K should know the drill - if you can't wait, please DON'T PRE-ORDER. If you pre-order, then change your mind and request a refund, my own experience in dealing with suppliers of special equipment and reagents is to allow AT LEAST 5 business days to receive a notification that my request has been processed, and if I don't get that notice to then send a SECOND request and wait another 5 business days. Only THEN does it make sense to involve my bank. This is the policy for most of the institution at which I am employed, and our suppliers are often very large with multiple employees handling such requests. A person who initiates a dispute within less than 5 business days of submitting a request is going against their own word of honor by not giving the other party ample time to comply. That is a knock on
you, not on the company you are dealing with. That's my $0.02 on that. Gotta run!
One more thing, to all you in the NE, my wife and children send their prayers but also much envy - WE wanted that snow!
