lol... somewhere in the depths of the busse compound there are 20 1/8" thick skeleton key's sitting in a box....

I just scanned through the 2000-2006 archives and didn't see any obvious thread titles about a giant skeleton key... I'm not crazy am I? does anyone else remember that thread/post/story? it was a skeleton key that was huge, like the size of a battle steel heart...

Are you thinking of Drew's "Grand Piano" Key? It was a PBF done up to match the Piano Keys from Mike Thourot.

no, this was a straight copy of the skeleton key but to a larger scale. I think it was actually of a similar size to the basic 7. I may be having fever dreams about it and mixing up other memories, but I swear that there was 1 custom made that was a scaled up sk...

the grand piano's were awesome though :D

ohhhh.. really !

I would love to see one of those..

Always thought it would be cool to see a SK with the thickness of an Off Duty.
Maybe call it the Off Key . .

Only pic of Andrew I remember was him with the MOAB.

FOUND IT!!! holy crap I don't even know how. the search "bigger skeleton" brought it up.

I read this post forever ago, and I guess I never really read it all the way through. I'm not entirely sure if that is actually a larger version or not now that I've read through it. I think my "steel heart" sized memories is from jerry's comments... sigh. well, at least my brain can stop thinking about it now.

and I was right in thinking it was alphamaniv -

I think this quote sums it up.

Ok. You got me. I used the boy in those last two. I thought that I could at least get somebody to fall for it. I used my little bitty altoids can and everything. You guys are tough to get over on. :p :D

Looks like it was a hoax, an extra large key would be cool though.

I'm looking for a pocketable hard use knife right now, and the only thing I'm really finding thats close to being 0 choil is the rat tail, so my mind was trying to figure out where the heck this thread was and what it was about exactly, cause a full sized 9" long skeleton key would be perfect for what I'm looking for.

sigh... my short 5 years on bladeforums have been full of random factoids and off beat jokes. like the oft used lemur jokes and what have you. haven't seen the spear avatar in a long time....

. haven't seen the spear avatar in a long time....

I miss that guy, & the lemur for that matter.

Good job bringing up the post Bro., memories.

Remember the Thin NICK chef knife :D I still have it, maybe I will post some pics.

For know here are some keys;

Cultie and Rat Tail.....
DSCN0559.jpg

If you want more, just ask! :)

are those yours? what are your opinions on them vs. each other, for slicing, stabbing, batoning etc?

specifically, which do you think would hold up to light abuse like batoning better?

NO HC or Basic 5 ( I wish! ).

At the risk of becoming a pariah, the slicer/stabber is the Rat Tail. It may be the sharpest of all my Busse kin knives. It just takes a wicked edge.
The handle on the Cultie makes it my fav of the two. It, too, slices really well. I haven't had much cause to stab anything, lately.
I think either could withstand light batoning ok.

I doubt you could be as much of a pariah for your opinions as I would be for mine. I'm carrying a cold steel finn wolf over the HC, and might prefer it over the cultellus becuase of it's lack of a choil. when I go from one to the other, I've gotten so used to having a good stable grip on the handle and putting the medium I'm cutting right up on the ricasso to start that I very quickly grow to hate the busse kin blades I try to switch out for.

essentially - the HC's handle starts at the edge. so if your gonna make the handle start at the edge - you might as well design it to have micarta there to give you a stable grip.

now that I'm looking at that pic, it appears that the swamp rat's blade heigth is in line with the top of the culti's choil.... I could always grind the edge flat and make the blade less tall on the cultie, resulting in a choiless version...
if I find I like the rat tail, I may end up taking a file to the edge where it meets the choil to slope it off and regrind the edge on it, removing the choils influence on the medium snagging. anyways I'm just biding my time till my customs get here :)

I have this fear that I'm gonna grow to like the smaller pocketble blades so much that I'll want to order a custom rat tail in infi with no choil. I was 22 when I ordered my first customs, and I would be 28-30 when new custom got to me... it would be worth it though...

if you decide to order the custom infi rt let me know, i'll order one as well. i think that will kick arse!
check out the culti mod grinducci did for me to lose the choil. works awesome. i also did the same thing to my howling rat.

a thin version for slicing and a thick version for prying would be an awesome set, very light for what they could do, yet big enough to perform the basic tasks required for a shtf situation...

If I like the rat tail enough, I might just do that :D it also depends on how cool the extra thin slicer choiless batac ends up being when I eventually get it...

a 3/32" thick version (choiless) paired with a 1/4" thick version in infi would be awesome
