Pick a time capsule car

After last night's unveiling of the '57 Plymouth Belvedere and my firm belief that we can now do a way better job waterproofing the car and the vault we use, what kind of car would you like to see buried as a time capsule?

We don't have any impressive "green" vehicles, so I'd go with something either luxurious, fast, or both. Maybe a new Cadillac or (if Ford goes through with it and it isn't ugly), the Taurus SHO that we'll supposedly see within a few years?

Those people in Tulsa were geniuses. They sold all that merchandise, tickets, hotel/motel rooms, food etc., got all that publicity, and all it cost them was one car and a vault 50 years ago.

  • The first hybrids (Prius or Insight). In 50 years, these "high-tech" energy savers will seem wasteful by comparison.
  • A Hummer. In 50 years, such a gigantic gas guzzler will seem insane.

The Jeep Cherokee. First SUV that wasn't - straight live axle in front, not IFS, a six cylinder engine, not V8, 18 year production span unmatched by most except the Volkswagen, which isn't produced anymore either.

A brand spanking new Caddy Escalade or Lincoln Navigator would be my choice.

Subaru Impreza WRX STi

it's almost economical, compared to a Hummer, fast as a Mustang GT and carries 5 people. all this and it loves the rain, ice and snow. i think it's a pretty good balance of lots of technology

ok, maybe i'm biased :D

if it was for 2007, i'd kinda think it would be important to use something that was either just coming in, or just going out that kinda captures the time. a Hummer would be interesting, but is that how we would want to have people 50 years from now think of us at this time? it's kind of an icon for waste in our country at the moment

i like the idea of the Prius, but it's not very flashy. i'm not that familiar with the Belvedere, was that an expensive/rare car at the time? or was it kinda common? a 2007 Z06 Corvette would be pretty cool...

Hey hey hey, I said AMERICAN cars, which is why this was going to be so hard! Otherwise we'd obviously just choose a SAAB 9-3 or 9-5 SportCombi ;)

The Hummer was a good pick because it's almost like the Belvedere was...pretty uncommon, decadent, and weird looking! I also liked the pickup idea because the new F-450 SuperDuty is really an amazing vehicle with a towing capacity of something ridiculous like 12 tons.

I just read that in 1998 they buried a Plymouth Prowler prototype (for the 1998 model that they never made). $300,000 car  They're neat, but not anything that represented the times. Hopefully this time someone put a sump pump in the vault ;)

Yea..stupid Civil Engineers forgot about WATER.. (theres a 4 page thread on Corvetteforum on it)

I vote the Chrysler 300C, pretty much what Detriot does best, nice sedan, nice inside, v8, RWD, and still some tech in it (displacement on demand)

I was referring to the 1957 Belvedere, which is a world apart from the 1955 model, though I'm not sure there's anything "little" about either of them. ;)

For its day, it wasn't a big car, but then his previous car was a pre-war Packard, when I was just a little kid. THAT was a tank.

i would say a corvette but it would be a shame to bury a vette unlike the '57 plymouth which was the high point of its life lol.

The 57 is now a pretty rare car, especially equipped with the then new Hemi, much less common than the tri five Chevys.

and imho much less desirable, a '57 bel aire 2 door with any V8 is worth some $$, i would say a bit more than a '57 plymouth.

i suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder but imho the '57 plymouth with the big funky wings has got to be one of the ugliest cars ever made, apologies to any '57 plymouth owners lol.

Corvette- Fast, techie, & almost affordable. An American mass production car that will keep up with or spank exotics costing 2-3 times as much- gets my vote!

57 Plymouths do have that UGLY/Sinister look to it..at certain angles, it looks like its out to get you
