Pick one of these two Bucks

I’m trying to choose between two knives for the next purchase for my knife addiction. One is a folder and the other a knife that you would most like carry around your neck so I’m not asking which is the better if the two.

The two knives I’m having difficulty choosing between are the Buck 882SBTG CMT Police Knife (ATS34 & G10) and the Buck Mayo Kaala (CPM-S30V). The only other Buck brand knives that I own are two different Folding Alpha Hunters and they have held up really well. I guess what I really want to know is if anyone has had a bad experience with either of the knives that I’m considering.

My normal EDC rotation is the full size Spyderco Manix, Benchmade 630BK and the Ontario Hossom Retribution I. Is the Buck 882SBTG just as good as or better than any of these knifes (in your opinion?) Has anyone here used the Buck Mayo Kaala? Any thoughts?

Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

I've never used the Mayo Kaala, so I won't comment about that blade. The 882 is a workhorse and has a good record with me. I'd say the 882 is of the same general quality as the knives you mentioned although the Spyderco might have a bit better reputation as a slicer. I am somewhat careful with my Military since I feel the tip is a bit on the thin side.

I still favor the 110 for many applications despite the old design. The newer 110's are amazingly sharp and stay that way for quite a while. I have an older Camillus Cuda in ATS-34 which is probably my most reached for EDC these days, and that knife has served me well in the field.

The best edge holder that I have is a Buck 193 with the BOS tempering process featuring S30V. I think you can't go wrong with any of the Buck knives, but the S30V is quickly becoming a high-end performer for those looking for a great edge holder with superb 'stainless' qualities.

i have a brand new buck 889 SBMF and the slightest tap on the spine defeats the liner lock, its scary. i put it back in the box and sending a letter today. buck has no e-mail for its customers. i had to compose a letter and spend a stamp to tell them the knife they sold me was dangerous and unusable

If you send the knife back, I'm sure they'll make it good. They have a good reputation for making things right.

I have a Buck 881SP that is one of my favorites. The linerlock is very thick and stiff and it has held up quite well for the year + that I've had it. It's a thick ATS-34 blade, but it does cut well for what it is. I've used it in the warehouse and around my house some and have had no problems with it. I have no regrets about buying that one or any of the Bucks that I have. I started out carrying a 112 and still have one in the "inventory", as well as 3 or 4 other Bucks.

I have heard that the linerlocks on the 882s are less substantial than on the 880/881 series, but I don't know that first hand. I do know that their W&R dept is one of the best in the business.
