I've picked up a few more models for my collection.

1. SQ587 - A late attempt at a modern mid-sized tactical knife. This knife has some pros and cons. Pro - Handle shape, for me its just about perfect. Fits my hand like they took measurements from me before they made it. Blade shape is excellent for a everyday utility knife, it was also ground evenly at the factory and only needed a little work to be really sharp. Con - its a liner lock and Schrade really never got the liner lock thing down 100%. There is more vertical bladeplay than I care for, although I did a spinewhack on it and it held up ok. A little more attention to the tolerances and they would have had a knife that could competed with most CRKT's in the market.

2. 140OT Trailboss - A nice knife, I wasn't sure how I'd like these newer OT's, but they are better than I expected. I do like the Safegrip handles, the knife isn't going to slip out of your hand easily. I'm working on a few more from that series, one of the best bargains still out there.

3. 154OT - A well used example, but still has a lot of life still in it, just needs to be sharpened up and it will be ready for the field once again.

Also picked up a couple of Schrade travel mugs, one to use and one for my growing Schrade promotional collection. Gotta have the right accessories don't I?

Best of all, the price for all these knives was less than 10$, minus shipping, off ebay. Some sanity starting to return to the market perhaps.

The quest continues....

The XTAC extreme tactical series is interesting. I also have one of the SQ587's. They wee only introduced in the 2004 catalog, so they might be considered somewhat rare. There were six in that series, though some were never produced that I have seen. Mine has the slight vertical movement also, so maybe it was the nature of that particular pattern. They are interesting in their being a last effort, and so short of a production run, only a half a year.

I have actually come to like my Trail Boss, which I have had since they came out in '95. Actually it was a Christmas present in '94 from a dear famly friend who was a stocking dealer. I have since acquired the entire series, and duplicates of the 140OT, since it is a handy shape, and gave one to my wife to cut meats, one to my soninlaw, and one as a user for myself. They are good buys right now. And the handle colors offered are interesting too. Blue, black, orange, brown, and of course green.

The 152OT, 154OT, 158OT series will always be a classic user. The blade/ handle shapes, redesigned from the Imperial Frontier series I think, lend themselves well to ergonomic use. The 152's were produced for a long time, so it should be years before the mint ones become rare, if ever. The 154OT was only made for twelve years or so, and are a bit rarer. They were replaced in '88 by the 158OT which was discontinued in 2002 and is a bit more common. I bought one of those NIB from a local lumber company a couple of months ago for $19.95, but the last catalog price was $41.95.

Don't forget to nab an Old Timer thermos to go with your mug. A case or two have just appeared on the market.
