I have been looking for something to start heat treating with, other than my propane forge. I found what looked to be a good deal on my local crlist, so I picked it up yesterday. Looking forward to getting it setup.

It came with a K2 Instruments dp-902f pyrometer, but I can't seem to find much info on that. The Pyrometer looks to be working, but I have not used it yet.

I have an Evenheat that is much taller and built in modules. it was important for me to put a retort inside it for thermal mass. It really makes a big difference in the overall performance and control.

I got a big cast iron pipe that is otherwise used to cap water lines underneath city fire hydrants. You can get something similar. It takes longer to warm up and cool down, but it will hold temp right where you want it, and there will be less issue with hot or cold spots. Just get a big iron pipe that will fill most of the empty space (with maybe an inch of air space on all sides so it doesn't rub the walls).

that looks like a serious score. Precise control of heat treating is a big leap forward.

Thanks for the tip, I will figure out a way to do something similar. The chamber is pretty big for only treating a blade or two at a time. I couldn't pass it up for the $100 asking price.

I see we were hunting for the same shop implement... :D

One of the perks to living in florida is the overwhelming abundance of ceramic artists... Glad things are progressing for you, these heat treat ovens / kilns open up a whole new world of crazy possibilities regarding blade steel...
