Picked up this Northwoods trapper from the (Non BF Dealer name removed) (nice place) on Fri. I don't see much written on them. What is your overall opinion on them? I thought it would be a nice addition to my small collection. Traditional type knives are very hard to come by in my area.

I have a Queen-made Northwoods large stockman, with stag and D2. Aside from the Northwoods-specific embellishments (stag, arrowhead shield, tang stamp, lack of blade etch), it's identical to the Queen #49 'Cattle King' stockman, in fit/finish, blade pull, blade grind & finish, bolsters. Also have a stag-handled & D2-bladed NW Folding Hunter, which is identical to the Queen equivalent in the same traits. So my perception is, if you're familiar with the equivalent Queen pattern, it's fairly clear what to expect from the NW version, at least as applied to NW knives made by Queen. I'm assuming your trapper (3-1/2"?) is also a Queen pattern.

If you're not familiar with Queen's patterns, then on their own merit, the Northwoods knives seem pretty nice to me. Fit/finish is very good, blade pull is excellent, edge grinds are consistent with Queen (which means some may be rather 'thick' at the edge ;)).

hunterjrg - I have no Northwoods knife; but may I ask you the question if that is elk-stag? A great looking knife - congratz on that knife :)

Great looking knife!

I have a Queen-made Nothwoods Straight Jack (D2) that I will never part with. It's a real beauty and is flawless to boot.

No, I dont think it is. Sambar?? Box just says stag. Excuse my ignorace. They did have some Northwoods with Moose paddle though. I was very tempted.

This Northwoods is one of my favorite knives, the "mini-Moose":

Nice smaller size for EDC to work where a bigger folder just won't carry well in khakis.

I also have a couple of the Northwoods Scagels, one is made by GEC:

I've read this one is made by Queen but Bark River puts the grinds on them:
