Picked up a Seal Pup

I originally did not like the edge to blade length ratio of this knife, but there was a Memorial Day sale at a local sporting goods store and I got it for under $50. Now I am coming to really appreciate the knife more and more. I had originally wanted to get the Seal 2000 but handled one at a gun show and felt it was too large-feeling for my hand. Maybe another time for that one.

One thing I do not feel comfortable about the Seal Pup is the sheath. I get the impression it's a bit hard on the blade edge, and am not really sure which direction the blade should face, or perhaps it can face either way? Is there an alternative sheath design for the Seal Pup that is a bit more comfortable? Maybe I just need to get used to it.

Jim,
I do not have a SEAL Pup, and so can't comment too much, apart from that I have handled one and agree that it just feels well balanced, and is a good length. The Kydex sheath with "rub" strips will probably leave some marks in the blade coating, most kydex sheaths (in my limited experience) do.

If you're not big on the SEAL 2000 handle, allow me to suggest the SOG Tech and or Tech II. The Tech II has the same blade as the SEAL, without the coating, or serrations, but with a soft Kraton handle. The Tech is a lttle shorter at 5.75".
Just my opinion...

Thanks for the reply, Bobby.

I actually like the hard Zytel of the Seal knives' handles a bit better, as it would seem to be more wear and weather/water resistant. Yes, the Seal Pup really seems the ideal size for a fixed-blade user for general knife chores. It would be a very good outdoor knife along with a couple folders. :)

Jim,
I just got my BG42 Field Knife, with Zytel handles. THAT is a nice knife! The blade is a little bigger than the Pup (and more $$$) but it is very nicely balance.... and easy to change the handles too!

...Under $50 for a new Seal Pup? You got a good deal on a GREAT little knife! There was a time when I was looking to trade-off the one that I have, but after "playing with it" a little, I came to really like this little brother to my SOG Tigershark too much to let it go.:).

The "regular price" at Bass Pro is $49.95!!!
At least it has been for the last year or so at the one I go to in Auburn Hills MI

James: I did not care for the pup sheath either, and have been looking for a quality leather sheath.

I think I have found it, a Buck pathfinder 105 leather sheath with a well designed wrap around snap.

I took my pup to walmart (in the box) and test fit it with the buck woodsman, or something, with too long a blade.

The pathfinder has the same length blade as the pup blade, I ordered the sheath directly from the buck website for $14.00.

I will post my final results. Sheath may need some tweaking to fit the pup well. Pete

Hi Guys,

At times, we are able to use a sheath designed for one knife on another knife.

This is the case with the SEAL Pup knife with the X-42 Field Knife leather sheath. It is a well made sheath with a snug enclosure. Here's a picture of the X-42 Field Knife sheath (of course, with the Field Knife):

The price for just this sheath is $16.95.
