Hey all,

Picked up a True Temper hatchet to take camping for making kindling. Looks like it's never been used and has a decent edge still and the handle seems to be firm with no movement.

Still an axe/hatchet novice and would appreciate any input from you all.

What do you guys think? I'm guessing it weighs ~2lbs and ~12in handle.

It's probably not super old when compared to known vintage hatchets, but it looks like a great piece! It should serve you very well for what you have in mind. A little steel wool to de-rust the head, a little sanding and oiling of the handle, and some stone work on the bit and she'll be good to go for quite a while. You might want to make up a sheath for it though...once it's sharp it'll stay that way and it'll need some protection...both for the edge and everyone else. :)

Clean as it gets. Enjoy! Whether one of these is better or worse than another is for you to prove. Suddenly the 'shoe is on the other foot'!

These are handy, I think that it would best serve as a carver these days, but they pop kindling into matchsticks as well. I've restored one or two, have not actually used one much. They don't usually sell for more than $10 so I don't pick them up anymore unless they are $3-5, or more for excellent old or unusual ones. I hope that you did not pay what it is priced for! Anyway, it should take a wicked edge (and hopefully keep it?), take it for a spin!
