I had to go out to a jobsite yesterday about 2 hours from my office out in the rural part of North Carolina (Stokes County) and spotted an antique store on the way to lunch so we stopped in. I picked up this Collins for $15.00. I don't know the weight but it's on a 30" octagonal haft. The head was painted bright silver and the haft was painted bright red like it was some kind of Christmas decoration or something and it had 2 sheet metal screws for wedges. Of course, all that had to go so out came the wire brush on a side-grinder. I also re-set the head a little lower on the handle, drilled out the wedge and re-wedged it. A little sanding on the handle and here you go:

I had been wanting to try a 28" or 30" handle before I order some from House handle and now I have one.
let me know what you think.

What a score! You cleaned it up nicely. Great job on the wedge as well. It amazes me at the things people use for make shift wedges.

Thanks, jwaj. I was going to remove the handle so i could sand it better near the head, but it did NOT want to come off. SO i just seated it about 1/4" down, drilled out what was left of the old wedge and re-wedged it. The haft is worn very smooth from years of use, glad I was able to save it.

SCORE!! Nicely done. You are hero for saving that sweet axe from being an ugly decoration.

Have you used an octagonal handle before? I love them. Great purchase.

Great find. The bit doesn't show any excessive wear or abuse. Let us know how you like it once you've had a chance to put it through its paces.

What a great find. I really like the Kentucky pattern. You did a nice job restoring her. She'll last for a long time now. Thanks for sharing her with us.

M3mphis, no, this is my first octagonal handle, also my first handle shorter than 36" on a full size axe. It feels really good so far. I've got a few heads waiting on hafts and all I can find locally are 36". I want to try this 30" out for a while before i place an order with HH.

Pegs, I think I'm starting to get a feel for which ones to buy and which ones to pass on. I didn't think this one showed a lot of wear either.

00, i found this diagram on line after your post since I was thinking it was a Jersey pattern (a guess on my part): http://www.fs.fed.us/t-d/pubs/htmlpubs/htm99232823/page02.htm#tpu How do you tell the difference between North Carolina, Kentucky, Baltimore-Kentucky, and Jersey patterns since they all have the extended lugs? I know you guys know a lot more than i do about axes, just trying to learn something here.

thanks for the comments, guys

And as Memphis said.. You are a hero for saving that fine axe from being a stupid decoration.
