I was shopping for a Zero Tolerance 0801, and the shop also had this Emerson available, so of course I ended up buying both. I've always been interested in Emerson knives, so I figured the CQC-7 was a good start. I really had my heart set on a CQC-7V, so that may be the direction I go instead of this knife.

With that said, I have a couple of questions. The knife is extremely hard to open. I assume that the pivot screw needs to be adjusted, but why would I have to do this on a brand new knife? I can see the bushing at the pivot, and only the outer bushing is turning, the inner one does not spin. Perhaps it also need some lubricant. Or I just need to open and close it a few hundred times to break it in. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Open and close it a few dozen times until it feels sticky. Disassemble and clean the pivot & washers, and you should be good to go.

I guess my question is why is this needed on a brand new knife? Is this normal? I've never had to do this before.

Some need a break in more than others and with Emersons it is pretty much a necessity.

A lot of products have a break in period. Hand guns, baseball gloves, motorcycles. Aren't those old sneakers or that relic sofa more comfortable than its brand new counterpart?

Edited to add that what gooeytek said is a good way to go about it. Some people add lube when they are done which you can do but its not necessary. The washers that Emerson uses are self lubricating.

Yes it is very normal for Emerson knives.

There is a lot of metal grit or fine powder shaving in there. I am thinking it is a good thing Emerson allows this because that acts as a polishing agent if one opens and closes the knife at least 300x and then takes it apart and clean and lube . Then it is smooth as glass.

So just open and close the knife while watching tv or something and then clean it and lube.

Ya know, I think that I either want a CQC7V or a mini so I have a knife with a blade less than 3". I think I will sell this one and get one that I really want.

Depending on what you do mean by hard to open ...

Concerning Emerson discussion. One thing has to be said:
Me, I also experienced other brand new knifes being sticky out of the box: Benchmade 710, SOG Pentagon, Spyderco Military, Cold Steel Espada Large, Cold Steel Espada very Large, Cold Steel Recon 1, Cold Steel Talwar ...
On those I played around with the Pivot Screw until it was fine.

If you decide to sell it shoot me a message I might be willing to pick it up if the price is right! Also one thing i've learned over the years is dont settle for a knife that isn't the one you want.
