Now let me preface this by saying I am not a slip joint fan. Never have been since I had a SAK close on me in Boyscouts (my fault). Nonetheless when I heard Schrade was going the way of the dinos I send the GF to Wal-Mart while I was at work for a little recon. She reported that indeed Wal-Mart had Schrade knives and they were on clearance. She also noted that she didn't think they were "My Type Of knife". As I carry Spyderco, Camillus, and Emerson.
After a late day at work I headed over to the Wal-Mart. I asked the clerk pull out whatever Shcrade knives you have in stock. He looked below the counter and returned with four OldTimer seniors. I opened the package looked for the "Made USA" on the tang. Then checked the rest for cosmetic details. Satisfied with my inspection I purchased them all.
I brought then all home and began my small review. Couple cuts here and lots of closing and opening checks. I ran one down the sharpmaker a few times (blades a bit dull and off ground).
This is my opinion. For $15.00 I don't think you can find a better old fashion slip-joint. The knife is very sturdy, and the blades seem of a very good quality. My only gripe is that the middle blade? (carving?) is bent a bit too much to provide clearance for main blade and small blade.
All of that aside the OldTimer is sitting in my back pocket as we speak and will be main utility knife. Alowing me to keep the Emerson Commander for SD. One has been given as a gift and the rest I am going to hang onto for a while.
Anyone think these things will be big collectors items? If so I am going to try and track down the smaller oldtimers. The senior is a bit big a slip joint for my tastes.
Anyways, I am glad to have found out about these knives later then never.
Thanks for reading,
