Hi folks,

I just received this old Solingen Trapper that I bought on a chance from a poor photo, I knew it was German, and knew the blade was broken ..but that was it.
When I saw the photo I couldnt see much except that the Bone looked intact, and very interesting, I bought it for NZ$12.00...now I see what you guys buy for a lot less, but we here in New Zealand just do not have the depth of history in knives that most other Countries do-you must remember our Country is very young.... NOT that this knife is anything near Antique, but in New Zealand if you find a older knife in a garage sale...its usually not a good knife to start with.
We have to search long and wide to find decent knives believe me!

Well I was pleasantly surprised, heres what I have, I do know its nothing special guys& gals but...I am going to clean it up, shape the blade, and use it, as I think the bone is just great....really great!

And look what I found hiding in the scales!...always great to find little extra's like this-these were nearly rusted in place-they havent been touched in a very long time..also on this angle - note how someone has angled slightly both oh the blades-why I dont know, I will re-introduce a softer more flowing cure to these blades.

The blade is stamped-I am going to hide this knife from Sue :o

Thanks for looking, I will post photos of the knife once I have finished cleaning it and shaping the blade.

"castrator?" not for sale to women, i gather. but i'm not sure. tweezers and a toothpick. i thought those were victorinox inventions.

Congrats, that is a great find, if I ran across it I would have without a doubt bought it. Your knife looks like it will clean up nice, reshaping the blade is no big deal, and that bone is going to look great with a little mineral oil, I think you did very well. I'm not sure but I think it might be a Joseph Rodgers & Sons. Please post follow up pics when you are done cleaning it up, I'm sure it will look great.

That bone is really something. The broken blade looks like it would make a good sheep's foot blade.

Duncan,

a great looking knife! The bone is great. If I were You, I would hide the knife (because of castration) from my wife, too. Just for the case... ;)

Do you know, which manufacturer built it?

Thanks for showing this beauty!

Wow, Duncan! That was a knife made for real men; no need for one o' those p.c., euphemistic 'spey' blades, when you've got a 'Western Castrator' at hand (yikes!). Methinks the livestock were very afraid, when the owner of that one was nearby.

Seriously though, that's a nice find. The bone is beautiful, and the toothpick & tweezers are a bonus. Very good.

Thank you for the nice comments guys, the knife is German, and I will follow up in a few days time.
Thank you for the link morrow

Neat knife, Duncan. The jigged bone is very nice... not worn down much either (I'd guess). Despite the blade etch, the knife looks suitable for general use. ...though I don't think I'd want to use the toothpick if the knife was previously used as intended. Is the broken blade a future sheepfoot or Wharncliffe?

Just beautiful my friend!! I too can't wait to see this one after its spa treatment. Although, I am incensed by the prophetical inscription on the blade.

Great find. That bone looks awesome!

Wow! What a great old knife. I would be thrilled to find an old worker like that one. I hope you post some pics when you get where you want it.

BTW... that name is a bit intimidating... talk about laying it all out there! Not sure what the tweezers are for unless you are "working with" (on?) hamsters. :D

Hey there guys, having a good laugh at the comments-and thank you, yes I will post photos of the finished product, probably not as good as other folk may do-but it should be ok...please give me a short while to do this!

I don't do a long soak in mineral oil any more. It gives the bone a waxy sticky look that you can't rub off.
Duncan, what is stamped under "Solingen" ?
It is a neat find.
