Picking an HI foraging/stompin' knife...

The summer months are upon us here in Alaska, which means it's time to go out and play like crazy until the next snowfall. (we get about 22 hours of daylight in July, might as well use 'em, eh?)

So, anyhoo my wife and I are lookin' for foragin'/ grubbin'/ stompin'/campin' knives The names are different, but the concepts the same. One that can be worn on a VERY regular basis, used to work in the garden, cut rhubarb, pluck at roots, pry up rocks, possibly clean a critter, make a fire, cut small diameter scrub brush, and cook a meal with.

So far I'm seriously thinkin' the "Pen Knife" looks perfect if there are any available. The Bilton might be okay for Karie, but definitely a bit small for my forepaws. Also pondering the twelve inch Sirupati or AK.

So, with tye previously stated objectives in mind, whaddyall recommend?

Thanks!

I hope you're not plannin' to be mean & scary to one of them teeny tiny brown bears y'all get over on the mainland.

( as opposed to the normal-sized ones over on Kodiak )

Pen knife is great, but you can't cut anything over about 4" with it (quickly). You can probably use it for more knife functions than most khuks. It's reall light and easy to carry though.

any HI khukuri will be great, but not for digging in the dirt or prying rocks loose.
You can use a cheap indian piece of stamped steel for that.
These are high quality cutting tools.

Nice to see ya in the Cantina.

The Bilton is probably a bit small for your needs, being really too small to do any hacking. A 12" sirupati will be VERY different than a 12" AK (which might suit you). BAS might be the bee's knees, for you, as well. I love the 16.5" WW II as "do everything" outdoors knife- see the "My Baby" thread to get an idea of what you can do with it.

Perhaps the best bet might be for you to get two HI kuks in the 12-17" range. I probably wouldn't get a siru for your stated mission, unless it's toward the longer end of that range, because it's so light,it doesn't have much chopping ability in the shorter versions.

I'd recommend a Pen Knife on the lighter end, a 15" BAS on the heavier end and a 14" BDC in the middle.

Your lady would do well with a Pen Knife, and you could get a BDC or BAS. The combination of the two would round out your duty list nicely.
