I, being the dummy I can sometimes be, locked myself and my wife out of the house.:D

It was just the door knob lock, no big deal.

I pull out my $100 Boker folder and start trying to jimmy the mechanism.

Then I start thinking about HOW POed I will be when I snap the tip off.

I switch to my $4 biltong kukri. After about 30 secs it suddenly slips off the mechanism and into the crack between the jamb and door. It hits the jamb hard and my hand slips forward!

Thank God for the Cho! It caught some flesh, pinched and caused me to let go BEFORE I ran a couple fingers up the blade. No injury!

I changed tactics. I used the Biltong as a pry bar, I pried the jamb away from the door, and used my Boker to fish the lock open.

Basically the Boker just kept the bolt from going back in the hole.

Thank God I carry 2 knives.

Good day. :D

Have you considered a spare key concealed near the door?

Just saying...;)

EDIT: I should also mention that before anyone accuses me of trying to be clever, the last time that I locked myself out of the house I wound up letting myself in through the window with a brick. I typically learn these lessons in the hardest ways possible.

Dave,

last time, I used my boot on the door, and ended up having to glue the splinters back togeather with epoxy.

(sigh)

I like to keep a spare house key and a spare key for the pickup in my wallet. And never leave the house without the wallet. This has saved me a lot of sturm and drang.

I keep a spare house key on the collar of my 125 lb German Shepard, not to many people look there nah just kiddin' she's 127 lbs.

It was a dutch boot...

Geesh

I believe it's called the jamb. long board where the bolt for the door latch and the bolt for the deadbolt lock into. That make more sense?

How'd you get a biltong for $4?

Dave, whats with the avatar. Smoke needed?

Fortunately (or I guess unfortunately if I was locked out) a few years ago I installed longer deadbolts along with reinforced door sets and striker plates with 4" screws which set the striker recess directly into the door frame studs and a bit beyond. I could get through the door right through the middle with an 18" AK and plenty of time, but not past the lock.

I keep a garage door opener keypad on the outside of the house, and a house key hidden inside the garage. That has saved me a couple of times.

The one time I locked myself out, I remembered all those things about regular locks are lousy and you can just slip them with a card, so I tried that and thought, I'll just "force" the lock and lost my temper and before you knew it, I bought a new $300.00 door :grumpy:

I did get in, though.

Aproy,

I got a hell of a deal.

K H Biltong I have 2 left. I had five. Two are my personal carry. One was gifted, the other 2 are for.......:)

Don't you make sheaths or something?:D
