Hey guys, I'm looking to pick up a D.H. Grohmann "canadian boat knife''.

I'm really into inexpensive quality knives since I view them more as tools than collector pieces or what have you. I have a Mora clipper in the tackle box, and a small opinel for light-use.

I guess i'm not really even a 'knife enthusiast'(all though i enjoy them). So I'm coming to you guys for advice.

Should I go stainless steel or Carbon on this? It might get a little wet(I do a lot of fishing/hiking/canoe trips) so I'm a little hesitant to go with the Carbon.

Anyone who appreciates a Mora is a knife enthusiast in my book! And a stainless Mora would be one of my recommendations for a boat knife, especially the Eriksson models in 12C27M should be very rust resistant, and the Frosts' fishing knives look good, too.

Absolutely. There's no reason to drop a wad of cash just to get a knife that looks good and performs well. I have a couple of Moras in my permanent accumulation too, even Okapis and Opinels, stored together with the customs and rare collectibles.

True true, my clipper is a very nice work horse for the 12 bucks i payed for it.

I might get a Mora 2000 down the road but its a tad large for what I generally like to keep around. I live amongst ''sheeple'' and I don't tend to carry something I can't comfortably conceal - even in the woods. I really want a Swamp Warden with a Kydex sheath for my neck - but I never see them available. So I guess i'll stick to my cheapies.

thanks guys, looks like i'll just grab the stainless version

Nobodody has brought up the rustless, near maintenance free, inexpensive Spyderco "Salt" line of knives? Seems like a no brainer. Joe

I'll look into those Mastiff, thanks.

I'm big into the classic look, I.E. Simple Leather sheath, Wood handle, etc. theres very few 'tactical' or 'modern' style blades I really find myself drawn to.

I've gotta second this. I bought a Spyderco Salt 1 to have on hand on my little sail boat, and discovered what a great knife it was. In fact, it's been my EDC for over 2 years now, it impressed me so much.

You absolutely cannot go wrong with a Spyderco Salt.

Choose stainless, anything with H1 steel would be even better

This being the SALT line. The serrated salt sheepsfoot bladed model would be my choice for boating. I used to sail up in Michigan. Even though it was freshwater the constant immersions made maintenance necessessary even on stainless knives. I would have absolutely loved the Salt back then.

Midnight -penguin, the H-1 steel used in the Salt line Can not rust. At all. You can't make them rust even if you want them too. The serrations handle the cutting of ropes and lines easier.

They are even nice on dry land. Joe
