Hi everyone new to the forum, new to forging. Getting antsy, had to post something. Going down to P.O. to pick up my first order of non mystery steel. Trying to slowly build a stock of known steels to work with in the future once I learn the skills to forge a decent blade. Have some old leaf springs (5160 ?) and some other miscellaneous mystery tool steel, figure I'll learn how to move the metal by hammering out a bunch of blank blades with the mystery steels first (develop muscle memory as well) then learn proper hardening and tempering with known steels next. Here's what I ordered for now, I'll work with more and different steels as time\$ permit but thought these would be good steels to start with. I chose 1084 and w2, from what I understand they both have similar heat treat and forge temps and one day I could try doing some Damascus with them, though that's libel to be a while.

Welcome! This would definitely be better in the makers section. Theres all sorts of stickies to answer 90% of your questions. Id hold off on W2 for now. It requires a fast quench oil (parks 50) and a little more precise temp control. 1084 and 80crv2 are excellent steels to start with. Im not sure what you have as far as equipment but theyre both easy to properly ht. Good luck

Thanks, I'll be sure to post in the makers section as soon as I actually start asking questions. To uninformed to even ask any intelligent questions just yet. This was just a general hello kind of post.
