Picnic knives?

My wife wants to go on a picnic this weekend with our little girl. What knife should I bring? I guess that I could always use the trusty KHnutbuster, but I think it would be better to use something larger.

Let me introduce you guys to the A.G. Russell Texas Ranger Toothpick. It's a big one at 5" closed and 9" OAL. Seems like just the thing for preparing troublesome breads, fruits, and cheeses.

My wife likes that this one has a built in jam spreader ...

... I don't have the heart to tell her what that stubby blade was really designed for. :D

Most toothpicks don't do much for me, but that one could. Veeery nice.:thumbup:

Plus it has the nail nick far enough forward that it's past the mid point for good leverage.

I've very often thought of the toothpick as the Americanized Laguiole. Since the toothpick seems to be a knife with roots in the deep south, and New Orleans is deep south and very French in the old days, I wonder...

That's a very valid observation. Toothpicks and Laguioles are very similar in profile. Toothpicks have a narrower cross-section though.

You'd like this one Carl. It has a relatively soft spring for its size. The nail nick is not even necessary, you could pinch it open if you were so inclined.

Christian, I like the leaf shaped blade. Good choice. I think I would have to bring my Case amber bone hobo (knife, fork and spoon).
 
Well when think BBQ I think a yeller knife. So for me either my yeller full size trapper or my sodbuster jr from my good friend Elliott.
 
Not exactly a traditional but the right tool for the right job... this AG Russell Folding Hocho is my outside, away from home, cooking knife...

Seeing that Greater Toothpick has reminded me of my favourite picnic/travelling/food knife. What better than something French to prepare food?

Chambriard's Le Compagnon in Ebony. File worked back, easy to open hard to shut(as it should be!) Stainless. About 4.5" shut. Comes in a variety of woods,horn,stag. Forumite Dagon has an excellent video review of this knife.
 
I usually take a swiss army that has a magnify glass or my uncle henry trapper 285UH, and a leatherman.

When just vegetables see this knife, they slice into the thinnest pieces


I actually want a Doctor knife with a spatula blade for my picnic knife.
It would be idea for spreading
 
I like a plain old full size Sodbuster...they're great to use on food.

I bring my Queen toothpick or my Opinel 10 for picnic duty, whenever the wife and I get into the out-of-doors.
