I have a question about the Buck 500, I have the opportunity to purchase one that has stag handles with no pins. Was this a standard option in the C year for the 112?

No I don't see custom in it, I will post pics of 2 bucks that are available. The second is a no nick 112 no dots.

I believe its impregnated burch.

Oh no! Buckman110, when the thread opener writes he has a 500 with stag scales
you can believe that the knife has stag (may be bone) but no wood scales. Why do you
think it could have birch scales? Did you ever see the knife? It seems not. You wouldn't
ask for pictures.

To answer your question, PCL: Buck opened the custom shop in 1982 and they offered the 500 with stag scales.
May be you found one of them. The 112 "no dot" was offered in 1972 and 1973 with Micarta or wooden scales.
As 110 wrote: Photos will be fine.

Question: What is C year?

Buy them both if you can afford it right now - both great knives and good versions to own! OH
Ps The "C" denotes 1995 manufacturing.

Thank you, Old Hunter

I think, PLC, your 500 is from the Buck Custom Shop. A great knife for each collection.

The C stamp is 1995. The Custom Shop was folded by then. A handsome Duke. It will have 420 steel. The 112 above has a squared frame, 2 small brass pins and scalloped topped sheath. Which could make it from 1974. Those have solid macassar ebony handles and 440C blade. DM

That's a very nice looking knife and looks as if it could be factory made. Here are a few thoughts, that could be an older factory made knife that had it's blade replaced in 1995. Or it could be one of the last of the factory stag line knives that were taken out of the factory line up at the start of 95. You can buy it and send it to me any time.

Oh I have already purchased both and should receive them next week, my next question is should I send them in for spa treatments. Opinions would be appreciated, I know it is my choice, just want opinions.

Hard to tell from your photo's. But, the Duke 500 looks like new. The 112 looks like the blade could be cleaned up and the brass polished. post better photo's when you have them in hand!

I'm not fully sure if your question is about the 500 or the 112. Concerning the 500, Stag handles without scale pins are shown in the 1994 catalog (#7 in the picture). The 500ST was still listed as available in the 1995 price list but not pictured in the catalog. There was a 110 shown but not a 112.

Nice work Desoto,

The 500 question is now answered. I only looked at the 95 catalog pic's, interesting that the 500 and the 505 were still available per the price list.

I know the ID of each has been established I mean about sending both knives for spa treatment. You probably cannot make it out in the current pictures (due to camera) but the 500 has brush marks or scratches on the blade and about the 112 it is always said somewhere to leave a knife in it's current state if you want to retain any value of the knife. So with the 112 being from the 70's should I just clean it and leave it alone in case I want to get rid of it or should I have it reconditioned by Buck?

PLC,

Buck knives go up in value from the spa treatment, it's a 70s knife not a 1700s knife. The mark on the 500 blade looks like a smudge to me and will most likely just wipe off', if not send it in with the 112. like I said above, post some photo's when you have them in hand.
