With the recent post regarding the TOPS Hoffman Harpoons, I thought I would take mine out and use it a bit. It's primary function is a secondary knife and spear tip. Let me start by saying I don't think it is good idea to use your primary knife as a spear or gig. This knife is designed to supplement another blade, and also has a barb incorporated into in to it to secure prey.
I started off using a small sapling I had cut to use as a walking stick, but has started splitting as it has dried. I notched it a few inches from the tip, and cut down to the notch. This gives a place for the butt of the handle to catch. One piece of para cord secures the Harpoon to the shaft, the other I use as a lanyard, should it come off the shaft.
I think it's a good idea to put the sheath on it when not in use.
Here is the video, it a little bloody in that it shows a fish being gigged and cleaned, but I covered up me cursing and swearing when I missed with some cheesy music.:
