I havent posted anything for awhile over here so I thought id share some pics of my day trompin around in the river valley. I needed to get out and start a twig fire for some "homework", and I also needed get centered for a bit after the rotten ambulance shift I had yesterday. This is a great area. Ive been exploring out here for many years now. On to the pics....

Propper prep for a nice fire is very very important. Dont skimp!!

A nice base will keep your shavings and tinder off the wet ground. This is someshag bark hickory.

I havent lit a fire in ages with matches. Its important to practice with everything you pack. I was laggin on this.

No matter how far ya venture, always garbage. This one is old, and got brought home for the collection.

Yours truely. Love the buff for keepin my neck warm. Layers are key to beatin the chill.

A weird sight. Thought my eyes were playin tricks on me.

Honey Locust. This one was covered in thorns. Bindlestitch taught me that they make a nice extender for flash tinders. Also good fish hooks.

Managed to gather up some Mullien so I can try to get that dang hand drill coal thats eluded me.

Cool pics, J. I like the one with the log between the 2 trees.

What are you using for your heath board when using mullien stock?

Bryan

Nice pictures, looks like a very cool place. Hang tuff on the stopping smoking thing, it gets easier and is well worth it.

Actually B thats not a log. Its an ancient board nailed to both trees about 5in off the ground. No doubt reminents of someones treestand. Im using cottonwood, or some Basswood pieces IAwoodsmen gave me at his advanced class.

Thanks bro. It has been rough, but each day is easier.

Nice photos and Excellent Gear

Thanks Bro

Thanks Dr Bill!

Great stuff J. I'm jealous you managed to finish your homework so quickly! Everyday this week I came home it was already dark. Oh, well Rick and I are supposed to do an overnighter on Sat. and I'll try to get the assignment done then.

So did you use the laconic for all the shavings?

Thanks Ken. Yeah I used the Laconico. I got that sucker screamin sharp the other night so it just blew through those shavings. Ive really taken a shine to that knife.

You an Rick have a nice time. Be safe. Whats the weather doin up your way for the weekend?

I like seeing Vic Farmers in the outdoors. Probably my most used knife, and it is the supposed 'backup' knife. I find myself using it all the time.

Hey Jake, that board nailed between 2 trees maybe somebody's shitter.

Also, a tip for you: being a smoker is like being an alcoholic, you're never an ex-smoker. I should know - I'm a smoker but my last cigarette was in 1989. IMO, it helps to remember this.

Doc

Thanks for sharing. Every time I've driven through there lately frozen water has been falling on me, looks like you got a good day.
Congrats on the two weeks smoke free, it's downhill from here.

Is it me or isn't the red shavings catching on fire really pretty? I'm getting soft I tell ya.;D Yes the laconico is a nice one. What's the blade length?

Congrats on the not smoking. The key is to keep trying even if you fall back into it. Eventually, quitting sticks. Another good trick is to replace the behaviour with something else.

Oh yeah. Mine gets carried and used almost every day. I used the saw to harvest those Mulliens.

That pic did turn out good. Fire photographs beautifully sometimes.

The blade length is 5in on that one. 4.5 in the handle. Good proportions for my hand.

Quitting smoking flat sucks. Its been hard. But...I have a pretty strong will. I would be pissed at myself pretty hard if I smoked another. I look at it like a '69 Yenko Camaro. Sure I would love one, but its just not in the cards.
