This was a great time....got to do lunch with Jerry Fisk, Dan Farr, and my buddy Matt Roberts!

Later in the day, Matt and I squeezed out a bar of 3/8" 1065 down to 5/16" with the press and squeezed a tang on another blade...lots of fun!

Dan and Jerry's Competition was great! The crowd was about 100-150 people (correct me if wrong Matt?) and we had 7 cutters. We also had a female competitor named (Holly?) who used one of Dan's knives for the event.

Enough talk...here are some pics of the event:

Matt and Dan in the 2x4 cut: Matt smoked everyone in 8 something seconds!

Here is Matt chpping away at a plunger...idea is to cut thru the handle in 1.5 min without breaking suction:

The female competitor with Dan's knife:

Dowel cut I flubbed! Missed a pencil point sized piece :grumpy:

Greg, I just got back in. I had a BLAST!!! Most fun I've had in a long time. I'll post more after I wake up and can think straight :). Thanks for posting those photos.

Matt

Hey Greg,
Looks like ya all had a good time. How did you like your knife in the comp?
Were the 2x4's as hard as they were in august? what was your time, and who won?! :D
Like your shirt.

Mace....I loved my knife in the comp....I was worried that the edge geometry wasnt thin enough....but everyone thought it was maybe too thin.

I honestly do not know my time on the 2x4....I wanna say under 14?? Maybe Matt knows. But Matt smoked us all!

Dan Farr won and I placed second just by a hair....that plunger cut was really tricky....I made it the distance but didn't get all the way thru.....only one guy did.

Yep...had to bring out the "Duke's" tshirt for this!

We all had a great time and Matt partied hearty after the event.....sorry Matt couldnt resist this!

Man, I am looking GREAT in that photo, kicking Travolta's ass, that's for sure :).

Greg, I've got to call you out on the crowd. I counted close to 100 in the left side stand alone. I think there might have been 300 people there, it was packed, that's for damn sure.

I can't believe how much the competition taught me. I was really happy with the geometry of the comp knife, but I learned quite a bit about handle design and I'll be incorporating that into my next knives.

I have to admit, when I got up there for the 2x4 cut my heart was pumping, I wasted a lot of hits and time when I regripped, a little too much adrenaline. I like micarta on a general using knife, but unless I blast the hell out if it, like you did, it's just too hard to control when you're wailing away. I think everyone was around 13-14 seconds for the 2x4.

I'm still pissed that I flubbed my water bottle cut :), but at least I got something to drink ;). It was an indexing issue and I'm going to be altering my next handles to correct it.

Jerry brought two knives with him. A big integral south west bowie that I used to cut rope and some other misc. things, and an incredible damascus and stag south west hunter.

Dan brought his camp knives and I enjoyed swinging them around and getting a feel for what they performed the best at.

Greg had a fantastic supply of knives at his shop. The python bowie was out of this world. ~11" chainsaw blade, great grinds, awesome finish, and superb balance.

I had more fun hanging out and shooting the bs with everyone than anything else. There was really a great group of guys. I'll be a little arrogant and say the coolest part of the evening is when two Japanese sword makers pulled me aside and said they could see the utsuri in my knife from back in the stands ;).

I'm really looking forward to going next year!

Matt

My forearm feels like a big knot from that plunger cut...I was over there with Dan today looking at that thing.......just one more good smack....

You know...one thing I found really kinda neat about this particular event was that a good majority of the crowd were not "knife" people, per se.

During the competition, I could hear people who were incredulous that a knife can make these kind of cuts.....and afterwards there were alot of questions to answer.

Jerry and Dan really educated alot of people in a short amt. of time with great information and entertainment and this crowd had a really great time!

Jerry's officiating and "EMCEE-ing" was second to none...he is a great entertainer!

Matt....you can't be arrogant enough about the utsuri in that knife!

Guys....let me tell ya....the hamon in this blade would just knock your eyes out! Also....Matt makes some of the flattest, cleanest knives I have ever seen...I am eventually gonna con him out of one so I can say "I knew him when"

As a side note...there are a ton of limbs in my back yard as a result of Matt's cutting....I shoulda had him work on the overgrown hedge along my backyard!

Great pics, thanks for taking the time. Matt trying to cut in on that chick to dance with Travolta though is very disturbing. :D

Hahahahah :D

I think Matt was just upstaging Travolta in the pic...dunno for sure....but that chick wants him.....I can tell by the way she's looking at him

I've seen that look in many women's eyes, she can't resist ;) :) . I'm not saying anything, but Travolta was pretty cool back then. I'm sure you wouldn't mind cutting in with him either Stan :D .

Greg when you come by, I've got some weeds I want you to chop on... actually pull :barf:  . People need to be careful when they invite me over, I usually end up chopping down most of their trees.

Speaking of cutting things down, we used your knife to chop some stuff up too Stan. We left all the residue and misc. crap on the blade though, we wouldn't want you to worry about scratching a pristine blade

Nice pics -- it looks like a great time!

Sweet moves Matt -- :D
