I got in Weds afternoon and had a great trip. Held at the Pine Ridge camp in the Mark Twain National Forest. It was nice to see all the guys again, and meet some new ones. Im impressed at the enthusiasm of the crowd, and all of the skill in one place was really something. It was a great event and I look forward to the next. Heres pics. I have vid too, that I will square away and post soon. Fri was a full day of classes, and Sat was a full day of skills competition. I taught a first aid class, that covered kit and the many uses of a cravat.

I grilled up some ribeyes for supper for the small weds group we had. It was kinda neat to see how a few of us just sat down and prepped a cook fire working together. Like the right hand knew what the left was doing.

Thurs while everyone was getting in and squared away I did a gathered onsite bowdrill (minus handhold) with box elder. I was happy to get it to work a couple times.

Joe did a great job with the bowdrill demo/class. Thanks to the one legged gypsy for bringing everyone a great set of wood to use.

Bushtramp getting down with a real mans bowdrill set. It was cool to see one of these in action. He was also kind enough to donate it to AMSs scout troop. Very cool.

Terry did a very cool improvised pack class with the alaskan pack strap, and horseshoe blanket roll. His skill set is just amazing. Fantastic guy who is one of the best teachers and outdoorsman Ive ever known.

It was a great event with over 50 in attendance. Thanks for looking.

That's a lot of skilled people at one gathering. Thanks for sharing the pics, J. Much appreciated.

Great stuff. Looks like everyone was fairly active. This might be the excuse I was looking for to meet KGD, as Brian told me it sounded like a good meetup

Nice turn out - I would love to make it to one of the gatherings in the future, looks like a blast !

I really like the idea of that bowdrill

Its in between columbia and jefferson city east of hwy 63 on hwy Y...

Those look familiar lol nice job tho man. People had a drive at this meet to learn. That is just cool as heck to me. Thanks again J!

Yeah. That handhold is antler. Works great. Bone works good too. Its nice for spinning out coals for practice, but I do think using found materials like a nice hardwood block or stone is a great practice too as the bearing block makes all the differance. I started with a couple proven sets and after spinning out a ton of coals, I now go gather materials on site to learn wood charicteristics. I do use that antler alot though.

wow, that's an awesome turnout! props to the organizers and the attendees for making something like that happen...i can't wait to see more pics/videos from the others!

I haven't done anything like that for a long time now and I suspect you've probably done it quite a bit more. What I'm especially interested in is the relative friction differences between the two and the seemingly self-lubricating nature of bone.

Great pics J, looks like an amazing time. I have learned a lot from Terry's posts and videos, I'd love the chance to learn in person some time. I love the axe pic, looks like a some sort of scary sharp wilderness wind chime :D

There really isnt a noticeable differance in performance for me. Only thing I will say is that some bones are thinner and have more pith in the center so they arent as tough. Antler is alot harder. Ive onle ever used antler and a chunk of cow shin bone as far as those types of materials. They worked pretty much the same.

Thanks guys. Appriciate it. It was a good time.

Ive taken both Terrys basic and advanced classes and have camped with him quite a few times. He is the most skilled woodsman Ive ever known and Ive learned a ton from him. Hes a great guy and a helluva camp cook. His passion for teaching shows. His backround and skills speak for themselves. Yous be hard pressed to find a better mentor.

Yeah that rack was cool. We were sitting around chattin and saw all the axes and thought it looked cool. One thing is most all those axes looked well loved which is a testimate to this crowd. Lol

Thanks for posting those shots J. I'll get some of my pics up later this week. Here is one of J teaching his First Aid/PSK class. It was a great refresher for me thinking back at my wilderness first aid course. J did a great job with a few Freudian slips that I will never let him forget :D

It was wonderful meeting everyone who attended. This was a great place to kick back, learn stuff, share stuff, smoke cigars (profusely) and do a little partaking of the whiskey.

Thanks Ken..... It was nice seeing you again. Glad you liked my class.

Freudian slips. hahahaha I still cant believe I said that in that crowd.
