Managed to get out for a quick hike before the heavens opened up on me.
Spring is here...
Harvested some Yucca for later since I forgot to bring my cordage :grumpy:.
Honey locust tree with some poison Ivy moochin...
First thing I did was rig up a tree rat pole. More times then not animals take the path of least resistance. If you can rig a simple snare, and spot a squirrel nest, you can get grub. Rigged 4 on this one, bout a foot or so apart on a limb. Lean up against tree and check later. (I DID NOT LEAVE IT RIGGED...PRACTICE ONLY)
Up to tree
Down to ground
Cutting a tree down with a knife. Bend tree, push knife through bend. Easy as pie. Used the tusker to limb it too.
Pieces cut, construction started. Hickory for the poles, yucca and hickory for lashings, honey locust "hook".
Honey locust thorn for hook, braided yucca cordage to bind it. Not sure how it would work, but it felt solid. Split the end of the hook, and inserted thorn into split, and lashed tight. Yucca is very strong when braided.
Originally wanted to bake some bannock and have soup, but the storm was growlin and rain was startin up. Had a good amount of ground to cover to get back to the car so, I headed back. Heres the set up I made entirely from Nat materials. Should be taller, but you get the idea.
Hickory lashings. These things are TOUGH! Bark is really easy to peel this time of year.
Strange sight to run into in the middle of the woods. Prob a hunter marking his way. Racoon Im thinking.
Staghorn Sumac...Makes good bowdrill sets, and a tasty beverage in late summer can be made from the berries.
Some eggs I spotted on a low hanging branch. Momma no where to be heard. I bet she had her eye on me even though I was unaware. I was carefull not to disturb the nest with my scent
Virgina Creeper, and Poison Ivy
The last pic I snapped. Trees are stubborn bastids. Nothing gets in their way.
