Managed to get out for a quick hike before the heavens opened up on me.

Spring is here...

Harvested some Yucca for later since I forgot to bring my cordage :grumpy:.

Honey locust tree with some poison Ivy moochin...

First thing I did was rig up a tree rat pole. More times then not animals take the path of least resistance. If you can rig a simple snare, and spot a squirrel nest, you can get grub. Rigged 4 on this one, bout a foot or so apart on a limb. Lean up against tree and check later. (I DID NOT LEAVE IT RIGGED...PRACTICE ONLY)

Up to tree

Down to ground

bushclass083.jpg

Cutting a tree down with a knife. Bend tree, push knife through bend. Easy as pie. Used the tusker to limb it too.

bushclass086.jpg

Pieces cut, construction started. Hickory for the poles, yucca and hickory for lashings, honey locust "hook".

bushclass087.jpg

Honey locust thorn for hook, braided yucca cordage to bind it. Not sure how it would work, but it felt solid. Split the end of the hook, and inserted thorn into split, and lashed tight. Yucca is very strong when braided.

Originally wanted to bake some bannock and have soup, but the storm was growlin and rain was startin up. Had a good amount of ground to cover to get back to the car so, I headed back. Heres the set up I made entirely from Nat materials. Should be taller, but you get the idea.

Hickory lashings. These things are TOUGH! Bark is really easy to peel this time of year.

bushclass090.jpg

Strange sight to run into in the middle of the woods. Prob a hunter marking his way. Racoon Im thinking.

bushclass091.jpg

Staghorn Sumac...Makes good bowdrill sets, and a tasty beverage in late summer can be made from the berries.

bushclass092.jpg

Some eggs I spotted on a low hanging branch. Momma no where to be heard. I bet she had her eye on me even though I was unaware. I was carefull not to disturb the nest with my scent

Virgina Creeper, and Poison Ivy
bushclass094.jpg

The last pic I snapped. Trees are stubborn bastids. Nothing gets in their way.

Great pics! Can you give me a rough estimation on the diameter of the squirrel snares (coke can sized...larger?).
Thanks.

Excellent stuff Jake!

Looks like Virginia Creeper

Not sure man, There is a ton of poison Ivy on that tree and surrounding ones too. If you look in the right of the pic in the trunk, you can see the fat vine of it. The foliage was all intertwined with it, so it was hard to tell if I had 2 seperate plants goin on....

Gotcha, the big fat vine on the right that hasn't sprouted yet could be, but the little vine with all those leaflets of 5 looks like Virginia Creaper. Go back and rub some on your genitalia, thats the only way to tell!

:p

I'm diggin' the natural cordage :)

those thorns are giant! wouldn't want to tangle w/ that tree

That Tonym guy can be pretty unbearable at sometimes ;)

I guess that hairy little vine to the side of it is the ivy :D

Who would of thought, mention Canadian Creeper and KGD shows up.. huh.....

I don't know about noxious, allthough I can be Obnoxious; so you can call me a Dandy-Lion... :D

Nice shots Jake. Those Honey Locust thorns are wicked. I wanted to bring some back from IL last summer to line the boundary of my land with but my friend advised against starting it growing here. I thought in a few years it would make a good natural barrier.

Great Stuff J !!!

See you soon!!!

Thanks man! Im countin down the days, Its gonna be epic.

Yeah they are. Even harvesting them can be an exersize in patience. :grumpy:

Yeah they like to run wild, so Id stay away from em too. Thats what they did with hedge trees many years back around here and they just went wild in some areas. "horse high, bull strong, and hog tight." is what they used to say about those fencerows.....

More great pics J. That honey locust looks vicious. I bet you could make some cool things with those thorns though. In books I've seen them used as barbs and fish hooks and stuff

Yeah I want to try out fishing with some. They also make a damn good coal extender. They wont take a spark, but will burn nice and slow when exposed to a coal or flame.

Thanks buddy. Glad some folks still like my threads. You and a handfull of others are why I still post em....
